D Stanfa Obituary

DC Stanfa

"So shines a good deed in a weary world."

While DC Stanfa chose to never view the world as weary, she did inexplicably brighten it for 61 years by living a life of kindness, positive energy, and unique humor.

DC passed on January 7, 2021. Born on Nov. 14, 1959 in Toledo, Ohio, DC (Denise) was the middle daughter of Dennis and Gloria Stanfa. She graduated from St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Grade School, E.L. Bowsher High School, and The University of Toledo, all of which are probably still recovering from the crazy, unforgettable mark her spirited nature left there.

After leaving Toledo, she lived in Dallas, Richmond, and Cincinnati, before settling in Hudson, Florida.

In her long and successful career in the corrugated container business, DC's uncanny charm allowed her to excel at selling empty cardboard boxes by the millions. This ability comes as no surprise to those who knew her, as it mirrored her ability to make lifelong friends within minutes of meeting complete strangers.

DC decided to leave the rat race of corporate America in 2018. Following her heart, she wisely retired to spend what unknowingly would be the last 2 ½ years of her life living her dream with her husband Tom at their canal-side home in Hudson, Florida. There, she spent her time watching the dolphins from their dock, writing, sipping Pinot Grigio, and making hundreds of new friends through her ubiquitous online presence.

In 2006, she published her first book, "The Art of Table Dancing: Escapades of an Irreverent Woman." She also wrote and edited the humor anthology, "Fifty Shades of Funny: Hook-ups, Break-ups, and Crack-ups" in 2012 and contributed stories to several other writing collections. She had recently finished two new books that would have, in time, surely given great joy to her readers.

In addition to her humor and writing, her legacies include her always generous nature, including mentoring other writers, supporting young women through the Boys & Girls Club of America, and serving on a suicide hotline.

DC loved Elvis, stone crab, wine, reading and writing, her girlfriend trips and annual vacations with Tom to St. Maarten, fabulous hats, Doris Day movies, the beach, and her friends and family, not necessarily in that order, because orderliness was never important to DC.

Anyone who knew her realized DC was one-of-a-kind. As her nephew Jorden said, "DC didn't just march to the beat of her own drum. She said 'the hell with percussion' and played something else entirely, and usually played it better."

DC is survived by the pride of her life, her daughter, Cori Hedrick; her beloved husband, Tom Schonecker; her mother, Gloria (Stoll) Stanfa; sisters, Lori (Mike Schroeder) and Sherry Stanfa-Stanley; and her nephews, Jorden and Kyle Stanley and Cole Schroeder. She was greeted upon her arrival at her next adventure by her father, Denny, and her grandparents.

Due to her thoughtfulness for others, DC would not want any organized public celebration of her life at this time. A fabulous, blow-out party in her honor will be scheduled at a safer time, hopefully this summer.

Contributions in her memory may be made to SuicidePreventionLifeline.org.

While DC would appreciate your grief and your concern, what she would most want is for you to make the most of your own life, to do what you love, and to be kind to one another.

I went to high school with D.C. and she was always the most uplifting person around. I just loved her sense of humor and how she drew everyone together. I recently rekindled our connection on FB a few years ago. It was so much fun to read her books. I was as shocked as everyone else at what has happened. My heart goes out to her family. I cannot imagine how devastating this is. D.C. touched so many people and we are all blessed for it. Much laughter in heaven, D.C.!

This world just won't be the same without DC in it. She was truly one of the funniest! I was hoping to visit her this March when I come down to Florida. I know she is so ecstatic with her new life in Heaven now! Fly High DC, and thanks for all the fun memories and books you left behind for us! Till we meet again my sweet Cuz!

Very sad to read this. I met DC in Dallas in '84 through a mutual Toledo friend, and these are certainly the traits I remember. We reconnected briefly via e-mail correspondence after I read her first book...still as bold and vibrant.

My sincerest sympathies to her family and those closest to her.

Oh Stanfa family ... what a loss. I knew DC through Sherry and the stories she told. The world is a little grayer now. All my love to the Stanfa family.

Dearest DC,
I'm also living in SW Florida these days, but if I were in Toledo, I would petition Loma Linda Mexican Restaurant to dim their lights on a busy Friday night and observe a moment of silence in your memory. I'm sure they would do it in heartbeat. Then I would be ejected for attempting to incite everyone to table dance in your honor.
Rest easy, Dear Lady.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. I remember those beautiful little girls from 1962 that grew up to lead successful lives, & made Gloria & Denny very proud to be their parents. Denise has slipped away much too soon but now rests with her Dad. I remember you all so warmly. God Bless you All

I remember all my classmates. Whether we were friends or acquaintance. She had such a winning smile and genuinely warm personality. God's blessings to her family. Such a sad truth that she has passed at such a young age.

To Gloria and all of you, my deepest and most sincere condolences. I loved co-conspiring with DC on some "breaking the mold" projects to let our community know about Friendship Lutheran Church, where I pastored. One of them resulted in a picture of our members dressed in their Sunday best, wearing Groucho Marx glasses, schnozzes, and mustaches with the question: Who says church members are no fun?

We also did a series of Dewar's Profile-takeoffs of members of our congregational members that appeared in the local newspaper. One of the profiles was of Cori, who, at the age of eight months, shared that her hero was either Da Da or the ceiling fan.

May the God we know in the crucified and risen Jesus comfort all of you!

DC worked for me sometime back when I was still Toledo. We had an “instant like” and I hired her on the spot. Her humor was sly, her smile wide and her heart even bigger. Years later in Florida we reconnected our friendship. Plugged the lights back in and they lit up! It was a special joy to know DC. I hope to see you when I see you. My heart just aches for the family’s loss. She is irreplaceable
