God tells us that the greatest gift is love. That’s what Sharon was for me, for our family, and those whose lives she touched. When I last saw Sharon in November she told me that her immediate family called her “the peacemaker”. I found it to be an appropriate title and one of honor for interwoven with the gift of love is that of peace. Love seeks peace. “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails”; I Corinthians 13:7-8.
Time and distance may have separated us but when my Mother died Sharon and I sat on the patio of my Mother’s previous residence and shared old memories and good times of “Aunt Dee”. It was as though we’d never been apart. It was at this time that we shared our belief in God with each other and His love for us. Sharon told me about going to a healing service a few years prior and that God had touched her in a tangible way. She left knowing that God had done something deep within her. Her faith in the greatness and goodness of God was evidenced by her love for Him and her love for others.
The next time I saw Sharon was at my Father’s funeral. She was very sick at the time and in a lot of pain. She said, “Nothing was going to keep me from coming to see my Uncle Ray”. And nothing did. Once again, we had time to share good memories and our faith in a loving God. Sharon had more than enough faith to believe that God was going to heal her and it was the desire of her heart to be healed.
The last time I spoke to Sharon was on Monday just a few days before she died. Although her voice was weak, she answered the phone in her room. I told her that I was sorry she was so sick and that she didn’t have to talk but that I’d like to pray for her. She said, “I’d like that”. Once again, in God’s Divine sovereignty, we shared our love for each other, our faith, and our hope in our God. I sang her a few songs and I’ll never forget her last words to me, which were, “Thank you so much. I love you.”
“But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love”;
I Corinthians 13:13.
Sharon was our gift of love from God; His tangible presence in our lives emanated through her. I will miss the sweetness of Sharon but deep within me is a knowing that God chose to heal Sharon in a way we may not understand, and that was to take her home in His loving arms where she would no longer know cancer, feel pain, or fear what might lie ahead. I can only imagine that as I write this Sharon is dancing on the streets of gold in heaven, quite possibly with her Aunt Dee and Uncle Ray, and I believe that I will one day be dancing on them with her.
Let us honor Sharon and our God by asking for a measure of His love for each other. And let us always remember that a piece (peace) of Sharon’s loving heart resides deep within our own.
From My Heart to Yours…Kay
