Donald Stohl Obituary

Donald Lee Stohl, 87, of Greensburg, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018. He was born March 1, 1931, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Frank Oscar Stohl and Hilda May (Armburst) Stohl. Donald was a 1949 graduate of the former Youngwood High School. He attended St. Vincent College, and transferred to Penn State University. He graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Arts and Letters with minor in geography in 1954. While attending Penn State, Donald was very involved in college life. Donald was rush and social chairman of his fraternity, Kappa Delta Rho. He was also secretary and designer of costume for the Thespian Club, and manager of Penn State's newspaper, the Daily Collegian. Donald was inducted and served in the Army in 1954. He received the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in May of 1956. Donald began a career in business as a very young man at Bayer's Pharmacy in Youngwood. Donald also worked for Wein Brothers in Brookville, Pa., and then A.E. Troutman and Joseph Horne in Greensburg. He opened his own business in 1967 in Greensburg, The Coach House Classic Boutique. He later opened a store in Irwin. Donald went on to be the chief executive director and executive vice president of his own college fraternity, Kappa Delta Rho. He increased the number of chapters from 15 to 48 at the time of his retirement. After retiring from KDR, he moved on to D and K Antiques, collecting and selling White Ironstone. Donald was very involved in clubs and had many accomplishments in his lifetime. He was a lifetime member of the National Fraternity Association. He served as president for several years and re-established The Laurel Festival in Brookville. Donald was president, instructor, and creator of many art shows at the Greensburg Art Center. He was the president of the Rotary Club. Donald served as secretary of the Westmoreland Symphony Board of Directors. He served as chairman and president of the Central Westmoreland Republican Party and received the Bill Tuscano Award. He was the first president and founder of Greensburg's local historical district, Academy Hill. Donald worked hard together with others to get historical recognition of this area with the state of Pennsylvania, and resided in Academy Hill until his passing. Surviving are his children, Kent E. Stohl, and Leslie A. Simpson and husband, Jeffrey; grandchildren, Melissa Ann Lowe, Eric Stohl and Morgan Stohl; stepgrandchildren, Brett and Ryan Simpson; and sister, Janet Stohl.
Honoring his wishes, Donald's services will be private. Entombment will be in Westmoreland County Memorial Park. KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME is entrusted with the arrangements.

A terrific and instrumental leader was Don Stohl. He led a group of young men at Virginia Commonwealth University into the top fraternal organization. We all owe a great deal to the time spent shepherding us through the provisional and full chapter process. Full of energy, committed to the cause and honor above all.

Great Memories! I remember the cold Winter night Don called and came over to talk about making our neighborhood a historic district. When he left the Acadamy Hill Association was born. I remember Don, Gloria, and Tom McCloskey car polling to Joseph Horne Co in Pittsburgh. I loved our political discussions and getting him (hard to find Trump Sign) . A wonderful Neighbor and a true friend. I know Don my brother Ed Eisaman, and Joe Baughman are playing Bridge and Laughing! God Bless my Friend.

I still use the many life's lessons that I learned from Don when I was an undergraduate and helped start MU Alpha chapter of KDR at WVU. I will always have fond memories of Don and what he did to help my fraternity brothers and I and the guidance that helped me choose my path in life. I also grew up in Latrobe so I was just a hop skip and a jump away from Greensburg.

Please pass along my deepest condolences to Kent and Leslie. A sad day for me as I have fond memories of your dad. He was quite a character and had such a huge impact on the National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho. Rest in peace Brother Stohl! Gone but forever a part of KDR History and Lore. We are all going to miss him.

I met Don the first week of pledging KDR at Penn State University. He was always promoting the benefits of fraternity life and the history of our chapter. And telling jokes. You could tell he enjoyed being around the brothers and he had a great sense of humor. We met years later has he was expanding the KDR brand at Clemson University and his approach had the same enthusiasm as I remembered back at PSU. Always positive and encouraging. His impact will live for many years through the fraternity he served. God rest his soul.
