In memory of George's service to our country, and to the way he embraced Hope and Freedom in open arms when our country needed it most, I offer a poem that I wrote reflecting upon my own father's service in WWII. I think the sentiments are most deserved here, too ...

A Father's Legacy

In a solemn setting on our nation's mall,
Under peaceful skies, on a gently curved wall,
Immortalized stars hang row by row,
Reflecting our heroes from decades ago.

Each one a memory of those who had served
And gave their all to a nation preserved.
Many were kids, but adulthood came fast.
They joined the cause, so that liberty would last.

Protecting our nation from evil's advances.
Venturing ahead into their unknown chances.
Under enemy fire, they'd charge up a beach,
Against all odds, the goal impossible to reach?

A lieutenant shouts orders to his advancing platoon.
Explosions resound. Another brother gone too soon.
The flag is passed, the charge pushes ahead,
Across injured soldiers, and those sadly dead.

Nightfall sets in, the smoke settles deep.
Soldiers drift off to their tired, restless sleep.
The calm is fleeting. The reprieve barely caught.
The sun will rise, with more battles to be fought.

Across trench-filled meadows, onward to that next hill.
Miles to tackle, gained yard by yard, but still
With each grueling day, bloodied and long,
The brave men persist, courageous and strong.

At Sicily and Salerno, they pushed opened the door.
On Omaha Beach, we sent in some more.
Then through the Bulge, and across the Rhine,
Army soldiers trudged ahead, advancing the line.

At Guadalcanal and Midway, the Navy set the tone.
Island by island each a hard-fought stepping stone.
On Iwo Jima and Okinawa, our Marines led the charge,
Undeterred by fear or the enemy's barrage.

We've heard the tales and recall those somber places,
Where soldiers toiled onward, and liberty now graces
Those who endured and survived through the toll,
With a vibrant spark glowing deep in their soul.

But the pages have turned. These young are now old.
And they pass along memories for us, now, to hold.
It's a gift we should honor, with dignity, with pride.
For within each of us, is a little bit of them, inside.

Let us follow their lead, with hard work and sincerity.
Let us journey onward with virtue and integrity.
Let us rise to the challenge, and be so inspired
By this greatest generation we have long since admired.

Let us uphold justice tomorrow and today.
Let us fight for liberty, in our own simple way.
For our flag proudly waves, as our nation endures.
Freedom lives on it's mine and it's yours.

And as these souls venture toward a world up above.
We shall offer our thanks and our deep, endless love.
And in our final embrace, our parting good-bye,
We salute your legacy. Rest easy now. Semper Fi.

Rest in peace, George. You have a nation's thanks.

Let the swell do the work, Captain George. Having worked on the Tallman & Mack trap boats for two seasons in the early seventies, I came to know this wonderful man well. I will remember him always.

Dear Family,
I'm glad Mr. Mendonsa got to kiss the girl of his dreams for 72 years-a beautiful life for a war hero.
I only know him from my grandmother and her friends gushing from the kissing sailor picture and have no doubt they were waiting to meet him when he crossed over. That picture-the best of America captured for generations.
Respectfully,
Susan Martin
