3 years later, and I am just seeing this. Howie! My brother! Many years ago I played guitar in a band with my brother. What great times we had. I am crushed to read this. You were one of a kind. A joy to be around. Rest easy.

Rest in peace, Howard. You were such an incredible resource to us at Youth and Shelter Services. I used your words to secure a 2.5 million grant to assist Iowa's homeless youth. You gave and gave until your body could not give any more. You were an angel on earth. Rest easy.

I worked with Howie for 8 years on the street with the Iowa Homeless Youth Center & he was my mentor. His kindness & wisdom helped me through many tough times & the many heart breaking things we saw on the street. With his compassion he touched many lives including mine. He was the kindest, most giving, wisest, & funniest man I ever knew. We continued to be friends even after I left IHYC & he was my friend for over 25 years & I will never forget him. I have & will continue to try to honor his spirit by helping those in need. Love Always Markie Mark

Howard, he helped me tremendously, he was always super kind. We drove to where an old mine collapsed near a home. He explained that there were hundreds all over Des Moines and there'd be more collapses. He told me, "I expect people to meet me in the middle." He'd do anything for everyone, but they had to do their part too. He was too great of a man to suffer the way he did during his final years here on Earth. Diabetes came after him tooth and nail! - Howard thanks for being such a great friend. MaKaylah will never forget the $5 bill you gave her when she was 5 years old, 4 years ago! Sorry, I couldn't or didn't do more to help you.

Rest in peace Howard. I know you helped a lot of people over the years. May you continue to look over those in need and lead them in the directions they should go.

Just found out this great man passed away and it hurts deeply. If not for him I would not be alive now. He was there for many of us on the streets. May you rest in peace. JOKER

Such a positive spirit, I enjoyed being in his presence. He was captivating in his teachings and helpful in every way, even performing my mothers final rights as I did not know how. I have searched for him to try reunite and burn medicine together and just... be part of each others tribe. I felt it was meant to be, but The Creator needed him more than we did. Aho, Brother.

I cannot tell how much Howard saved me when I was a teenager and later in my adult life. He was truly a genuine, caring, and compassionate man and mentor! He was a major positive influence in my life and the lives of many of my friends, including my son, Caleb. You will be dearly missed Howard and thank you for loving us all so much and being truly selfless!!

Very sad to hear of Howard's passing. We traveled all over Iowa trying to protect the places where others rest. I am honored to be a friend. Wishing him well on his next journey.
