Richard Riendeau Obituary

Richard P. Riendeau EAST GREENBUSH - Richard P. Riendeau died quietly in his sleep September 20, 2015 at Evergreen Commons in East Greenbush, New York. Born September 22, 1932 in Springfield, Massachusetts to the late Estelle (Gagnier) Riendeau and Arthur Riendeau he graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1950 and received a Bachelors of Science from Springfield College in 1954 and a Masters Degree in Science from the University of Illinois in 1955. After a brief high school teaching career at Lyndon Institute in Lyndonville, Vermont he served in the United States Army in Denver, Colorado. While serving in the Army he was involved in research on the physiology of exercise and shared credit for several published studies on the effects of heat, altitude and exercise on the human body. He joined the faculty of St. Lawrence University in 1958 as an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and coached freshman football, basketball and baseball. During the summer he managed the Canton Merchants baseball team and later served as the commissioner for the league in which they played. In 1963 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute named him an Associate Professor of Physical Education. He was the head football coach at R.P.I. until 1972 while also coaching freshman basketball, freshman baseball and later supervising the intramural sports program. During his tenure at R.P.I. he took a football program which had the longest losing streak in college football at the time to several winning seasons. While at R.P.I. he developed the Football Aptitude Test which measured basic athletic abilities and was the fore runner of testing now widely used in professional sports to evaluate potential prior to draft day. The system was initially tested outside R.P.I. in the training camps of the Montreal Alouettes and the New York Giants. He coached the Metro Mallers professional football team in the Seaboard Professional Football League during the 1973 season in which the team continued on to the championship game without ultimate success. In 1975 he was appointed as an Associate Professor at Oberlin College where he coached the football team, the baseball team and the junior varsity basketball team, which won an Ohio Athletic Conference championship. Sports Illustrated wrote articles about his college football teams in 1965 and again in 1975. In 1979 he left Oberlin and returned to the Capital District to begin a new career in real estate with the Moffit-Holllis company and later was a founding partner in the October Real Estate Group. He is survived by his wife, E. Anne Riendeau and four children Thomas D. Riendeau of Rexford, N.Y., Terri E. Riendeau of Princeton, N.J., Michelle K. Riendeau of Natick, Massachusetts and Bradford C. Riendeau of Watertown, N.Y. and four grandchildren, Nicholas Riendeau, Dominic Riendeau-Krause, Sarah Riendeau and Colin Riendeau, as well as his sister Shirley Talbot, of Jay, Vermont, and nieces and nephews Janelle Light, Luke Talbot, Matthew Talbot, John Talbot. Even in death he continues to participate in scientific and medical research. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Wonderful time coaching and working with Coach at Oberlin College in 1975. We had the smallest team in the nation -
16 players. The players worked so hard and they were a real credit to College Football.
Coach was a wise man and kept our team working hard throughout the season. He was our leader and best cheerleader. We had a blast together.
My life has really been Blessed by GOD to have the opportunity to know
Coach Riendeau more than I could ever say.
GOD BLESS THE RIENDEAU FAMILY !!!!

Dick was the reason I became a real estate agent. He encouraged me and inspired me to consider the profession, and I had the pleasure of working with Dick at the October Real Estate Group in Latham 4 years before moving to Chapel Hill, NC where 25 years later, my successful real estate career continues. Dick was a mentor and kind soul who truly cared about people. I always loved attending team meetings with Dick knowing I'd learn something new. He was really a special man I feel lucky to have known.

Dick is the person who I credit with starting my real estate career. I walked into the office at October Real Estate Group about 25 years ago inquiring about a property for a friend. Dick and I started talking, and when he sensed how enthusiastically I was searching for my friend, he suggested I consider a career for myself -- which got me on a path I'd never considered. 25 years later, after launching my career in Latham with Dick at OREG, I now have a thriving business here in Chapel Hill, NC. Dick was a mentor to me and the kindest of souls who truly cared about others. His team meetings were always interesting and his knowledge vast. I'm truly grateful to have known Dick.

To the Riendeau Family,
Dick, my friend and mentor. He was the reason I got into real estate in 1984. Always encouraging, caring, considerate and helpful. Dick was always there when someone needed help. He was never too busy. My fondest memories are of the October Real Estate Days with Dick, Steve and Amy as founding partners. Dick's wisdom always prevailed. They were good years, shared with great, caring agents and good friends. With Dick's passing, a chapter in our lives has sadly closed.
Dick will be missed my me and MANY, MANY others. We all have our fond memories.
Dick may be gone, but he will never be forgotten!! Rest in peace my good friend.

Linda and I extend our warmest thoughts and condolences. Dick was a big influence on me and my family actually. He took good care of me and I will always appreciate that. He spoke often about his family and when he spoke of the grandchildren his face really lit up! Thank you Anne and all the kids for sharing him with us. I'd like to believe I became a better person in part because of knowing Dick Riendeau and having him as a friend.
