I would like to tell you all about the neckless in this photo that was taken on Alice's 80th birthday. I have volunteered for a Refugee Education Program here in Tucson for the past three years. Low Beginner English class and Citizenship Class. The students made this simple wooden bead necklace held together by a white string. They asked me to give it to her. And to tell her that it was "for protection and to feel safe in the Universe." When Alice and I talked about my students and the classes she made a donation to purchase Low Beginner English books and everything from Granola Energy bars to gift certificates for Kentucky Fried Chicken! They all knew about KFC and LOVED it but couldn't afford it. They all work as dishwashers or as cleaners in local hotels. So every time I handed out a book or a KFC gift certificate I would tell them who paid for these items. She loved hearing their stories when we got together. They LOVED her COMPASSION and so did I. It is what gives life the deepest significance.
In her last months she and I read a book by a brilliantly gifted writer..Elizabeth Lesser called "Broken Open. How Difficult Times Can Help us Grow". If any of you want to check... her absolutely favorite chapter in the book, was entitled: "Bozo's on the Bus".
Safe Journey Alice. Aloha. Chris Simon

I was fortunate to meet Alice when she became my neighbor in Fort Lowell Place. She was a lovely, intelligent woman who always had a smile a joyful soul.
