Eric Schocket Obituary

Eric Neal Schocket Eric died on September 3, 2006, after a year long battle against Leukemia. Eric was born in Tucson on April 9, 1966, the son of Lee I. Schocket, M.D. (deceased) and Eve Schocket. He attended Catalina Foothills District schools and Amphitheater High School. He received his bachelor's degree, highest honors, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of California, Berkeley, and earned his master's degree and doctorate in English from Leland Stanford Junior University. In 1996 he married Alison Greene and moved to Massachusetts to begin his career at Hampshire College. He quickly developed an affinity for the college - its students, its faculty and staff, and its aspirations. He took great pleasure in teaching, he devoted so much of his energy to furthering the ideals of Hampshire. He was passionate about research, about his politics, about his writing. He published many papers and he had just completed a book. Eric did nothing by halves: when he ran, he ran marathons; when he rowed he spent every morning he could on the Connecticut River, which he loved. Besides his wife, he leaves two wonderful children, Ben, age 8, and Margot, age 5. He also leaves his mother Eve, his sister Luanne and her husband Justin Edison and their son Cameron. Eric was deeply loved and he will be greatly missed. A private funeral service was held in Northampton, MA; a memorial service will be held at Hampshire College at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
