David Suther Obituary

David Wilson Suther
Tuscaloosa - David Wilson Suther, age 69 of Tuscaloosa, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Hospice of West Alabama with his family at his bedside. Services will be Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Ken Dunivant and Dr. Clinton Hubbard officiating. Visitation will follow the service at the Suther home, 1311 Downing Ridge, Tuscaloosa, AL 35406. Norwood-Wyatt Chapel is directing.
David was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1969 and attended the University of Alabama.
He had many friends from all the years of playing baseball and golf. His golf buddies even had a year end dinner for the selection of the "David Suther Best Dressed Award". Those memories were so special to David after his terrible car wreck in 1984 leaving him disabled. The disability kept him from some things but made him closer to his family with their complete support. David used his disability to help others by volunteering his time at DCH Rehab Pavilion. He was awarded the Inspiration Award by the hospital in 2009 for his over 25 years of service in helping others with their disability.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Wilson Suther and Jane Gill Suther.
David is survived by his loving wife Judy with whom he had just celebrated their forty-eighth wedding anniversary on February 17. He was also blessed with two wonderful children, Steve Suther (Anna) and Georgia Abston (Andy); sister, Carol Suther Burrage; and three granddaughters, Madelyn Lee Abston, Mary Alston Suther and Tucker Ann Suther. The granddaughters always went to David for their hugs and candy from his dish next to his chair.
David was an avid member of a local gym which members would say his work outs would put most people to shame but David would say the best part of the gym was leaving.
David always had a big smile and looked for the best in life. David and Judy had such a good life despite the hardship of his accident. They loved and respected each other. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Brad Lee, Travis Lee, Bill Robertson, Brandon Farmer, Cedric Stewart, and Jack Kennedy. Honorary pallbearers are golf buddies from Meadowbrook Country Club and Tuscaloosa Country Club, past and present employees of Russell S. Lee Floor & Tile, and classmates of Tuscaloosa High School class of 1969.

Judy, I'm very sorry to hear about David. I had not seen him in a very long time but kept up with him through our mutual high school friends. I remember him as a really nice guy, great sense of humor. I know he will be missed.

What a joyful picture of David, representative of his entire life. And, Judy, YOU ( as well as Steve and Georgia) helped to maintain that smile on his face. David made the decision to enjoy life, and help others, too. What a life well lived! I have never known more courage and determination.
He now resides in Heaven. We will join him there!
Much love,

Judy: I am so sorry to learn that David has died. I have great memories of playing golf with him, some at Meadowbrook but mostly at Tuscaloosa Country Club, before his tragic accident. David had long been a quality guy before he was so severely injured, but he was an absolute inspiration from that day forward. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time; I know that he is up in heaven and warming up for a round with Graham Pilsch, Bobby Hemphill, and other old buddies from Meadowbrook and TCC who are now trodding the fairways in the sky. As my Irish cousins would likely say, may your grief be as a fallen leaf.
