Maureen SCHROEPFER Obituary

Age 91 of St. Paul Passed away peacefully July 6, 2015 Maureen (an Irish form of Mary) was born to Albin D. and Celestine (Leary) Bertrand in Sleepy Eye, MN on August 7, 1923, the youngest of five daughters. After graduating from Sleepy Eye St. Mary's High School in 1941, she completed coursework at Mankato Commercial College in 1942. She married George W. Schroepfer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye on June 8, 1946 and relocated to Mason City, IA while he completed watchmaking school. Maureen and George owned and operated the Schroepfer Jewelry and Gift Store in LeSueur during the 1950's. The family returned to Sleepy Eye for five years and then moved to St. Paul in 1965. Maureen provided office and bookkeeping services to International Harvester and several other businesses before becoming office manager within Facilities Management at the University of St. Thomas. Her work included coordinating students working on the campus grounds. She retired there in 1988, following twenty years of service. She then worked for ten years at A. Johnson and Sons Florists in St Paul, retiring in 2001. Her talent for connecting with customers and sharing her knowledge of flowers served everyone well. Maureen loved socializing and meeting people. She possessed an uncanny knack for discovering common bonds with people within minutes of meeting them. She was an avid walker, bicyclist, and traveler, and especially loved to be with family and friends. She never tired of organizing events in which numbers of family and friends came together. She personally mailed out over 100 invitations to "Mo's Garage Kegger 90th Birthday Bash." She enjoyed any chance to meet with her "boys" and their families, attending musical and theatrical productions, and sporting events. She enjoyed every party everywhere. A tireless advocate of Catholicism, Maureen especially loved the Church of St. Mark, where she was an active parishioner and volunteer for fifty years, including singing in the choir, serving in the Prayer Shawl Ministry and as treasurer of the Council of Catholic Women and its Honor Guard. She was also for many years a member of the Holy Family Guild of the Little Sisters of the Poor in St. Paul and a volunteer at the Minneapolis Veterans Home. She was a supportive and loving wife, and caring mother to her three sons. She never ceased to support and enjoy her extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, and her sisters Patricia (at age four), Alice Haas, Joan Alston, and Jane Hart. She is survived by her three sons and their families: Mark (Jean) of St. Paul and their daughter Sheila (Philipp) of Albany, NY, Gerard "Jake" (Mary Ellen "Molly") of Dallas, TX and their sons Tommy (Lyndsay) of Dallas, TX, Johnny (Samantha) of Chicago, Ill, and Michael of Culver City, CA, and William G. "Bill" (Lucienne "Lucy") of St. Paul and their children, Otto, Cecilia, and Guillemette. Memorial Funeral Mass 10:00am, Friday, July 10, at the Church of St. Mark, 1979 Prior Avenue, St. Paul. Visitation one hour prior at church. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Monday, July 13 at 12:30p. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Church of St. Mark. 651-645-1233

I had so many wonderful walks with Mo. And was always amazed by her memory and attention to details.

Schroepfer family: My prayers and condolences to all of you. Upon reading Maureen's obituary in the Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch, as a distant Bertrrand relative, i remember her parents, and seeing the family at the semi-annual Bertrand Reunion. Her photo bears a resemblance to my mother, Mathilda (Pepy) Bertrand Krzmarzick. I only wish I had known your mother better. She must have been a joy to know.

I got to know Mo at iris Park, where my mom, Betty J., lives. Mo was such a lively, fun person--a treat to be around. She always greeted me and called me by name when I saw her. We often invited her to parties and family get-togethers at iris Park. She had a great sense of humor and was interesting to talk to. My deepest sympathy to Mo's family. We all miss her!

I had the pleasure of meeting Mo at Iris Park where my mother also lives. The first time I met her she immediately made me laugh and I looked for her every time I came to visit. She was a great friend to my mother and I am grateful for having known her. She was a gem.

We will really miss Mo at St. Marks. She was just the kindest and friendliest person ever. Her smile and positive attitude always gave me a lift. What a blessing to have known her. So glad we can at least be united with her in prayer. Praying for the repose of her soul in the loving arms of Jesus. As she is praying for all the family to know his comfort and love.

Jake, Mark & family - your mom was a great lady. We had a nice visit whenever I would run into her. I hope I can have a kegger for my 90th birthday party!

I knew "Mrs. S." from my high school and college days. Even though I haven't seen her in years, I remember her as a kind mom with a wonderful sense of humor. She could make a mean batch of popcorn too!!!

Maureen was such an inspiration for living, laughing, and loving. It will be my challenge to repay even half the goodness she has shown me and my family!

Maureen always had a smile for students at St. Thomas. Her Irish wit and down home stories brightened many a day. She was an active listener and always responded positively to whatever came up during the day. Oh the stories she could tell.
