Florence GRIEVE Obituary

Age 83, of Naples, Florida and Sunfish Lake, Minnesota, died October 1, 2012 of complications from a recent stroke at Thistle House, her home in Sunfish Lake. Her life was characterized by commitment to family, friends and community, as devoted wife, mother, dog lover, patron of the arts, supporter of our Minnesota veterans and their families and, most recently, political activist opposed to voter identification. She is an emerita board member of the Landmark Center in St. Paul, a dedicated supporter, with her husband, of the Guthrie Theater and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and served on the board of directors of the Minnesota Children's Museum and Milkweed Editions. A long time member of the St. Paul Garden Club, the Pierson and Florence Grieve Courtyard at the Carlson School of Business reflects this passion. At the request of governor Rudi Perpich in the late 1980s, she participated in the development planning for Minnesota's Public Arts High School. Born in Bronxville, New York, Flo attended Roycemore School in Evanston, Illinois, and Northwestern University. In 1956 she moved with her husband, Pierson "Sandy" MacDonald Grieve, and three small children to St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and began a life-long love affair with the Twin Cities. She is survived, and will be greatly missed, by her husband of 62 years, Sandy, her sister, Katherine Hynds, her three children, Peggy, Scott and Bruce, daughters-in-law, Debbie and Laureen Grieve and grandchildren Joshua Schoen and Alec, Heather, Kate and Pierce Grieve. Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am, Friday, October 5, 2012, Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul) with visitation one hour prior to services. Parking available in Lot A, with further transport to Chapel available for those who need it. Contact O'Halloran & Murphy www.ohalloranmurphy.com or 651- 698- 0796 for further details. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Grieve Family Stress and Resilience Fund at the Child Mind Institute, which helps military families get children who are struggling with emotional and behavioral problems the support they need and deserve (www.childmind.org/ grieve).

Dear Flo:

Although we have only known each other a short time, you truly have touched my heart. From the moment I met you, I loved you.

You are a wealth of knowledge on many subjects.

I loved cleaning "with" you, watering plants "with" you and rearranging "with" you.

I will never forget the look on your face when I brought the vibrantly colored fuscia, orange, and purple, sunflower bouquet with me, and you saw the flowers in my hand before I even opened the door and you said "are those for me?" "Yes, they are" I said, and you had the BIGGEST smile! Those flowers were so special to you that when they dried up you hung them outside near your door, and they are still hanging there today!

God Bless you and your family.

Dear Sandy, Flo was my forever "new best friend" after you moved to Sunfish Lake. She had a God given spirit of love and friendship and she will be missed by all of us who were recipients of those blessed gifts, so much love to you and your family. I got to know them in absentia through Flo. Blessings, Carolyn DeCoster

Darling Flo,

I know that you can read this. You are the light on a gray rainy day, the energy to electrify a non-profit organization, the embrace to wash away all that ails us, and the love that warms our hearts forever.
I think you maybe redecorating where you are, since your joy for color surpasses the majority of us.

Much love,
Nancy

Every time she saw me, or anytime I called she would shout out Lisafer! She always greeted me with her beaming smile. She never failed to ask how I was doing as well as my family. We had many wonderful conversations during her workouts. She loved her family fiercely, was crazy for her Grandchildren and adored her life at Sun Fish Lake. I will miss her always and I am forever blessed to have known and loved my friend Flosie.
God's peace and never failing love to you all,
Lisa Miller (Lisafer)
