December 22, 2011

Through facebook, I recently re-connected with my long time friend Shelley Claugherty. Through this, I found that Juanita had passed. Words cannot express my sadness at hearing this. Looking at her pictures, she looks to have barely aged, what a beautiful woman she always was, inside and out. The house on Fremont was so much more than just the Claugherty/Peel/Meemken house. It was home to me throughout my junior high and high school days and beyond. Juanita ALWAYS treated me as her own and when I was in that house, I always felt love and warmth and as if I was with family. For those memories, I am forever grateful.

I have no doubt that even heaven is improved by Juanitas presence.

I am sorry that I let so many years go by without being able to see her again. I miss my Claugherty family.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of Juanitas family. Going on without her must be difficult beyond words, but I have no doubt she is watching from above and counting on all of you to do your best. She would expect nothing less.

God Bless Juanita and her family,

Eulogy written for Juanita Claugherty by Kevin Meemken

Thank you all for coming to day. It means a lot to the family to have you here. A lot of things have been said about Juanita today and she was truly a wonderful woman. What I would like to talk about today is her ability to make everybody part of the family. They say the extended family but I feel for Juanita it was never an extended family in her, it was just family. What makes this unique is it was repeated with everybody she met like me you can also see it with Diane, Rita, Pam and Mark just to name a few. Then just like Juanita, the whole family adopted us as family. In addition to all this Juanita would then take it to the next level by accepting our families as hers.
I’ve known her most of my life. Growing up just next door, always playing with the kids. At some point, while I was not yet a teenager I was having issues and felt I had no were to turn. Juanita seen this and was there to give me guidance, and as with so many people throughout the years she did not judge or criticize but listened and with her calm voice began to instill wisdom and understanding that was direct and appropriate for the situation. It was as if she already knew and understood and was able to help from the first moments of any crisis. She could always be trusted and maintained the highest level of confidence with whom she as dealing with. She helped me personally get through some very tuff times, High School then the Military Service. She was never more than a phone call away. The one thing I would also like to say and everybody may know about her is she was deathly afraid of flying but to her credit she did fly once and that was for me to be in attendance at my retirement from the navy. I could never get her to do that again.
Diane has been part of her family for over fifty years, they both found comfort in taking care of each other and families during both good and bad times. They were relying on each other for strength when needed, dependable and tolerable of each other’s needs. They even worked four jobs together, once again always helping each other.
Rita to has had a very special relationship with Juanita, God mother to Nicole and care taker to Sara for the most part of two months of her life as Rita got back on feet. Trust is never more evident as when one allows the care of their child to another.
Pam and I were taking in and adopted at very young ages by Juanita and family, during the summers Juanita would let us wonder around the neighborhood, her home was a magnet for everybody but as kids always wanted to get out of the house and play, we enjoyed walk around late at night sometimes too late and as Pam reminded me Juanita had a code she would use to let us all know she was in control and it was time to come in. She would flicker the porch light on and off several times, this told you, you better be getting in the house. Juanita was always in control and keeping us safe.
Mark, he was her comic relief, and anybody that happened to be around, his ability to make her smile and laugh. Sure running around in his underwear and dancing on the table did not hurt. Juanita enjoyed a good laugh as much as having family around. Mark was able to give her this even on the darkest of days.
She was a Mother, Friend and confidant; she will always live on in our memories, this very special woman Juanita.

Mom tonight we were at your wake and it was one of the hardest things to see. The one good thing about this night was you looked so peaseful the way you used to look before you got sick. I was happy to see your hair the way it always was. I know you were with us today and helping us through our pain. Mom I thank for giving us the strength to get through this it was the unconditionas love you gave me growing up that has helped me through this so far. Mom tommorow we say goodbye to your body. Which is very hard to do. We know your spirit is in heaven helping us through this please help all of us through the next year. Mom you have always been my hero and always will be. There was never a time you turned away from us mom no matter what we did or didn't do. There were times we made you mad and times we got mad at you but you never made us feel unloved. I have always loved you and always will, you were my mother my best friend and the one person I could go to with anything and you always helped me with any problems I was having and standing by me even if l was wrong. Mom I thank you for the unconditional love you gave to me and everyone else. God Bless you Mom I will see you when its my time.

You listened to us when we needed someone to talk to, you talked to us when we needed advice. You helped us with whatever we needed help with and never expected anything in return. You loved us all unconditionally and we loved you too. You put us in our place when we stepped out, and you cheered us up when we would pout. You were always cleaver, and you will be missed forever. You were a mother, sister, aunt, cousin, grandmother and friend. All of our hearts you always did mend. We miss you and love you forever.

Dear Aunt Juanita,

I type this with a heavy heart as I never had a chance to get to tell you. As a child I was told you were my Aunt & have grown to know that my Dad loved you as a sister & that love was good enough for me to cherish you as my Aunt. You were the only Aunt I ever really knew as a child, your family was the extended family I never had. You accepted my family as if we were one of you & I am FOREVER grateful for the love & acceptance you gave when people were less accepting. Your love meant the world to me & I enjoyed every holiday, every picnic, and any family get together. I will always remember the laughter, the music, the dancing, the food, the Vikings games, and always beginning & ending my time with you with a kiss. You were a pillar of strength that I so admired watching you "mother" everyone. I am very blessed I was able to at least hear your voice when you called; although I wanted to say so much more & I am thankful enough that I got to end our small conversation with telling you I love you. From the bottom of my heart Aunt Juanita, Thank you for the love you showed me as a little girl & thank you for making me feel like one of your own.

Grandma,
There are so many memories I have growing up with you. I wish the past two years I would have been around more, but we both know the reasons why. You told me I would get through this since I am strong enough. Like I promised I will never go back to those "dark days". You never judged me, but believed in me. I am still getting use to coming over to your house, to me I have always called it Grandma's house. I walk in still thinking I will see you, but I don't. I am honored to have your name as my middle name. I feel truly blessed with the last few months we did have together. I will always have you in my heart an everyday life. I know I will see you again. I miss you so much. I know you are at peace now. I love you.

Take Me To Heaven

Take me up the mountain, so so high.

Upon the wings of angels

I will fly

Up to Heaven and through

the gate

where time doesn't matter

and you're never late

Life will be perfect in

paradise

No more troubles, pain

or sacrifice

God will be sitting there,

upon his throne

waiting for us to finally

come home

He loves us all, with his

whole heart

Even when we're on Earth,

we're never far apart

He knows when it's our time

to go.

It can happen anytime, we

just never know.

I'll be ready to go when my time

gets near.

It's better in Heaven, that's what I hear.

Grandma,

Thank you for being the strong woman that you were. You can see the reflection of your strength in all the women in this family. One of the things I have always said about the women in our family was that we were a strong bunch of girls and it was all thanks to my Grandma. You had a very sincere love for everyone and were so accepting of people. It’s no surprise that you were so loved by so many people because you were easy to love. You were someone everyone wanted to be around. I still remember when I was a little kid I had said to you, “ Grandma, you don’t look like a grandma. You barely have wrinkles” You thought that was the funniest and sweetest thing. I also loved coming over for breakfast as a kid because you would make me raisin toast and would cut it exactly how I liked it. I have so many little memories like that with you that I will always cherish. I have learned that memories are the most important thing to hold onto when you have lost someone you love. I am happy that I have memories and advice from you to keep with me always. I really miss you and things will be so different now that you’re gone. It’ll be so weird going to your house and not seeing you there. You were the first person I would look for when I came over. Even though when I go over to your house and you won’t be there it will always be Grandma’s house. I couldn’t imagine calling it anything else.
You leave behind this wonderful family that I’m so proud to be a part of. Thank you for giving all of us that because during times like this we certainly need family. We all are so lucky to have had someone like you in our lives to love us and to influence us in so many ways. I love you so much Grandma!
