Daniel P. Drevnick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 19, 2009.
Dan Drevnick''s affinity with speed began early. He followed his father''s interest in drag racing and even started restoring his own muscle car after graduating from Woodbury High School in 2005. He worked two jobs to pay for it, said his father, Ken Drevnick. "That''s what type of person he was," he said. "To get someplace he knew he had to make it happen." Dan Drevnick, 22, of Woodbury, Minn., was one of three Minnesota National Guard soldiers killed July 16 during an insurgent attack in Iraq, a week after he returned from a visit home. He was assigned to the 34th Military Police Company in Stillwater, Minn. His father said Drevnick was part of a military police unit and hoped to become a state trooper. He was his family''s sixth generation in the military. His family spoke of "rebellious years" in high school when he pierced his ears and grew out his hair. He was energetic _ "our wild child," his stepfather said _ loved learning, skateboarded and raced cars. He also was fond of duct tape and once used it to mummify a friend. "He was never afraid of anything," said his stepfather, Charles Freese.

To the family of Spc. Daniel P. Drevnick:

As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

To the family of Spc. Daniel P. Drevnick:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Drevnick Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

To Daniel's family, I just wanted to say that your son is a courageous man for being a soldier, protecting his family and friends, and also America. He protected complete strangers without reason, and for that i want to say thank you. Without him and men like him I couldn't be in school, getting an education or have freedom. Your son will be remembered and honored. You should be so proud.

Dear Ken, Roberta and Family,

I am so sorry for the loss of your brave son and hero Daniel. It seems like yesterday we were all in high school, yet the years have passed and delivered joys and sorrows.

Please know that although I never had the honor of meeting Daniel, I do know how lucky he was to have such great parents and extended family. Daniel has honored you, our blessed country, and all who sacrifice for good in the world.

The sacrifice of Daniel is often in my mind, and I shared your story and my memories of you with my daughters. I reminded them that were it not for the bravery of courageous people like Daniel, we wouldn't be free today, and as safe as we can be.

God bless you Ken, Roberta, Julie and family, may God work his healing hand on you, and thank you so much for your wonderful son.

Dear Roberta Freese,

I share your pride and deepest sorrow for the fine young man that you brought into this world and raised. Dan is a shining example of a true hero.

Roberta I had the honor to fly with your husband Chuck. On many of our missions together he spoke of Dan and how proud he was of him. I understand Dan was your sixth generation veteran, for that you should be very proud.

May your family find peace in the days to come.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Our deepest sympathies in the loss of your Dan during his service to our country. He will be missed by many. I remember the night he & Todd were up most of the night playing electronic battleship; and when they decided to go to a club and Dan had only a sweatshirt on so he borrowed a dress shirt from (big) Todd but he filled it out nicely with the sweatshirt on underneath. They were good buds.

Here's praying God will help you all through this tough time.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.

For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

Every second you sacrificed
I hold you in my prayers.
So with one hand on my heart and the other in the air;

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you.

To Dan's Family~
I cannot even begin to imagine the pain and sorrow you are experiencing. But having read all the entries, I can see that you are supported by MANY--near and far, family, friend & stranger. I felt compelled to write and say THANK YOU for sharing your beautiful, talented and sweet boy (now a man) with our country. It is so sad to lose a good soldier, but it can help us all to be reminded of the price that has been paid for over 200 years to keep this country free. May Daniel's soul and the souls of all of our departed soldiers rest in peace!
God Bless You All!

Mr. Drevnick and Mrs. Reese, I knew your son as a good soldier and a good man. Dan was always there when you needed someone to cheer you up or when you needed a hug. Dan had a way about him that was just endearing. But he was also a dedicated and trusted member of the platoon. I am his Platoon Sergeant, I would trust Dan with my life. Your son will be missed by the entire platoon. and I will, truly, truly miss him.
