35 years ago today, on Aug 16, 1990 when he was 7 months old my son received a BMT, life-saving care @ the University of Minnesota. Dr William Krivit´s medical care & research saved Andrew´s life. We are forever grateful.

This year Bill's birthday is on Thanksgiving and we find that so appropriate. It is at this same time of year, way back in 1995, when our Darcee was in transplant under his care. Bill was a blessing and an inspiration. We started our MLD advocacy work in 1999 and launched MLD Foundation in 2001 ... and have been caring for families, advancing research, promoting newborn screening, and improving better access to better clinical care around the world ever since. Thank you Bill for all that you did and all that you inspired. Blessings to his children ...

I reflect often about Dr. Krivit. He was all for his patients and trying to find cures for their "incurable diseases". He managed to convince a private practice radiologist to help him many years ago (1990 or 1991) on pure passion. He gained my respect by his commitment to his patients/research and he kept it by his respect for all his professional colleagues (including me). He was catalyst for the advances in treatment made after his death. His legacy lives on not only by papers, but by physicians/researchers that continue to want to help Dr. Krivit and his patients.

He was also the inspiration for the MLD Foundation which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year with family conference sin 4 countries, 3 of which had never had a gathering of MLD families before!

Dr. Krivit began treating my son Eric, at the age of 4, for ALD, now 23, and against all odds at the time, Eric is still alive.
I can still remember vividly watching Bill play and interact with his kids in the clinic, and I remember thinking how much I truly loved and admired this doctor.
I spent many years watching Bill in the clinic and as the years past suddenly it became aware to me that Bill began to look older to me. I remember growing fearful because it suddenly became painfully apparent to me that Bill would not always be there for us the way he had always been.
It was not long after my first realization that Bill was looking older that I found out Bill was ill.
I remember feeling very angry as I was suddenly forced to realize that Bill was not actually like the superheros you read about in comic books who go on for ever to save the day.
I remember running into him in the hospital a number of times during those last months of his life and I had so many things I wanted to ask him about, all of the whos, whats, wheres, whens, hows, and what ifs, but every time we talked I didn't want to go there, I was afraid that if I did I would be letting him go and I didn't want to, I wasn't ready to let him go and I could tell he wasn't ready to go yet. So we talked happy talk instead.
I always told myself there would still be time to talk about the other stuff and then, it seemed as if suddenly in the wink of an eye, he was gone.
There are days when Eric is suffering and I really wish you were here to give me the wise advice you did for years, and there are days when Eric is happy and smiling and I wish you were here to see him happy and smiling. The point being, while physically you are not here with us, you live on in each one of the kids you have touched. So when we hug our kids, we are hugging two people. Which makes us doubly blessed.

Our Lindy just celebrated her 30th birthday. While she never met Bill, it brought back memories of her younger sister, Darcee, and all of those who cared for and loved her. Both have MLD. Bill was one who led the pack! Her memory lives on through Lindy and now in our 10th year, the MLD Foundation.

My name is Anne (Ward) Carpenter. I was diagnosed with AML in March of 1990 and was sent to U of M for my BMT in July of 1990 at the age of 13. Dr. William Krivit was one of my many angels who saved my life. Thank you so much for sharing him with me. Nineteen years later, I am married with two sons (another medical miracle), who would not be here if it wasn't for Dr. Krivit. My deepest sympathy for your loss for such a great and outstanding man. I had the honor to meet him for the first time Jan 96 ,when my daughter Caitlyn Woolfolk was first diagnosed with Hurlers Syndrome. I am active duty army and luckly came across military doctors that knew Dr. Krivit and directed my daughter and I his way. Caitlyn Woolfolk had her BMT June 96 at age 13 months old and is doing very well today and soon will turn 11 years old on 19 April 06. I am deeply saddened with his loss and he will be greatly missed. Throughout my military career, I would try and send updated pictures of Caitlyn and did have the opportunity to meet with him one last time Sept 04. Dr. Krivit has always been a great influence and had always kept my hopes up for the best life for Caitlyn. Sarge he would call me!

To the family of Dr Krivit
I am deeply saddened to hear of your loss and thank the MLD Foundation for opening this guest book to both inform the many whose lives Bill touched and to allow us to express our appreciation of his life. As a young Consultant gaining experience in the transplantation of metabolic diseases, I cannot count the number of times that I turned to him for advice - especially for patients with leukodystrophies. Bill's response was always given so promptly and without any consideration for his personal time. On many occasions, and without me asking, he sent reprints of his papers, or chapters or protocols, so that I always felt that I knew the state-of-the-art. I shall miss him and our playful verbal jousting more than I can say. Many of my patients indirectly owe him so much and on their behalf I say "Thank you" to you, his family, for sharing him with us.

Dear Family of Dr Bill Krivit,
We as a family have been deeply saddened by the loss of such a wonderful man. His life has forever touched ours as my son Eric was the first non-related donor transplant for ALD. Eric received his transplant at the age of five and now 19 years old continues to enjoy life. We as his family continue to enjoy having him in our lives something that otherwise would not have been a reality if not for Bill's brilliant mind credited with saving his life. In addition to the care of my son, Bill also can be creditied for assisting me with getting into the University School of Nursing when I made the decision to transfer to Minneapolis where Eric could be close to Dr Krivit. I continued to speak with Bill on occassion following the years after Eric's transplant. He became not only my son's doctor but a good friend with many words of wisdom. Our lives have forever been touched by this true humanitarian and he will live on in our hearts.
Thank you to his wife and children for allowing this man to carry on his work which can be credited with touching so many along his path.

It was 1983 and I was a newly graduated nurse with an eighteen month old daughter diagnosed with Hurler Syndrome. I was desperately seeking a doctor who would try a bone marrow transplant (BMT). I had an “out of the box” idea, backed by my own research, and I was grasping at straws trying to find some hope, somewhere.
I found an article in Lancet which backed my own thinking and brought it to Children’s Hospital-New Orleans. The doctor picked up the phone and I was introduced to Dr Krivit for the first time. Hearing my plea, he invited my family to the University of Minnesota to investigate. Kelly’s brother was an identical match and she became the first child he transplanted with Hurler’s syndrome.
Knowing Dr Krivit became a “bigger than life itself” event, for me and my family. I am so grateful to him and his family that supported his genius, out of the box thinking and confidence to try what no others dared.
He was a person truly engaged in life….he didn’t just sail by on what he was taught….he had an inquiring mind….would ask profound questions that would stop a freight train on its track. For instance, after he and his team decided to transplant Kelly, he sat me down and asked me, “Why would you want your daughter to have a BMT when you have no data to know the outcome?” Without even thinking, I spewed back at him as quickly as he hit me with his intensity….”I’d rather have her die trying to save her then never having tried at all.” He was silent with no come back! His courage allowed us to know Kelly, something that would not have been possible without the BMT halting the retardation from Hurlers Syndrome.
There are so many things that make him stand out in the Hall of Pediatric Fame (young doctors take note): 1) He was always available, I knew if I called one of the many numbers he gave me….I WOULD find him on the other end of the line and later he answered email. 2) Dr Krivit really cared even though he wanted us to think he was tough…I would tell him, “You’re just a teddy bear inside.” He’d tear up. 3) He listened to his kid’s parents and would consider their view. For instance, before transplant we were doing baseline testing of organ systems and I asked him how he was going to evaluate the nervous system function. He said he couldn’t. I asked him, “Why don’t you do lumbar puncture for analysis pre and post transplant. He immediately assigned the BMT fellow the job of doing just that. A few years later this analysis was quantified. 4) He always went the extra mile and in my case 25 miles. When coming to New Orleans he would call and ask Kelly to have lunch with him and Chip. We met them and he just beamed with pride as he and Kelly chatted about life, school, whatever questions he posed to her and she sang songs to them (in her high soprano voice) all the way to the airport.
After Kelly died from a medication error, he stepped up and went out of his way to come to my hometown 25 miles from Tulane University (where he gave a presentation) to tell me what the post-mortem showed. He said, “I had to talk with you so you could have closure.” What a loving man!
You will remain dear in my heart forever. Goodbye precious, Dr Krivit….I will never forget you!

Dear Krivit family,
Our family was so saddened to hear the news about Dr. Krivit. We will miss him so much.
Our daughter, Kathleen, was diagnosed with Hurler's Syndrome in 1983 and had her bone marrow transplant in January, 1985. She is now almost 24, and if it wasn't for Dr. Krivit we wouldn't have her today.
He was always available for our questions or just to talk. He continued to search for ways to help with her quality of life.
God bless all of you and thank you for sharing him with us.

Dear Mrs. Krivit and family,
Our whole family is so sorry for your loss. Dr. Krivit was truly a great man who will be missed by everyone he touched. We wanted to thank you so much for the gift of time you gave him to work with our family and others. Our little Laramie died on November 19th. Dr. Krivit saw her through 2 bone marrow transplants, and when everyone else wanted to give up on her, he wouldn't. Laramie had MLD. Instead of the 2-5 year time frame, she lived for 7 years with a good quality of life after her transplants. She lovingly referred to Dr. Krivit as "Dr. Goldfish" as he would always steal her goldfish snack crackers at her visits to the clinic. When Lara couldn't talk anymore, she still would get a smile on her face if you mentioned his name, and she gave off a little giggle.
No doubt, they are up in Heaven enjoying goldfish and talking about old times.
God Bless you all.

Dear Family of Dr. Krivit,
I see in this registry many comments about the good Doctor, Kamp Krivit and the many lives that were touched by this man and his bride---the ever popular Ma Krivit. I too had the rare privilege to have spent many many high school days at their home, with their sons Dan and Mike. To this day, I still consider them the best friends that anyone might wish to have. In part, my feelings for the Krivit Family come from the shining example of famous hospitality set by the Dr. and Ma. Everyone entering their Kamp was gratiously treated as family which was a true blessing for a screwed up high school kid such as myself. With kids of my own, I can now be amazed at his patience and fathering abilities in being able to wade through a sea of 18 year old kids--chat a bit while wisely monitoring our sobriety and give you the look now equivilent to "what up???" As a parent now of 2 sons myself, all of their friends are treated like family and I thank the Dr. for teaching me this valuable lesson.
My prayers and sympathies to you all. As I have already written to Dan and Mike, I now hope God is watching over him well and treating him to eternal blue sky sailing on calm oceans and spectacular golf courses that give him a hole in one every day.

On behalf of the hundreds and hundreds of families that have lived at the Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, our staff and theBoard of Directors, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies as well as our sincere gratitude for everthing Dr. Krivit accomplished in his life to help critically ill children. We have always remained in his debt for all of his work as a founder of the Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities. And we are even more indebted for the many lives he saved and the even greater number of lives he blessed just by his compassion and knowledge.

To The Krivit Family,
Our deepest and heartfelt sympathy. Our family is so deeply saddened by Dr. Krivit's passing. He has taken care of our son Ryan since he was 10 months old and diagnosed with Hurler Syndrome. He cared for his patients as if they were part of his family and I am sure every family whose life he touched has many great stories and memories. Dr. Krivit was always there for our family - guiding us in the right direction. He gave Ryan what we could not - his life and for that we will be forever grateful.
Thank you Mrs. Krivit and the Krivit family for making the sacrifices your family had to make for him to make the profounding difference in so many other families lives. He loved you all so much! "Good bye my dear friend"

My name is Ryan Viscito - I am 14 andDr. Krivit has been my doctor longer than I can remember. He was always so nice to me and even made some of my hospital stays fun. He really cared and gave me 110% all the time. I will always remember when he called my house- he would test me and say "hello Ryan, do you know who this is?" I always knew that voice. Mrs. Krivit I am so sorry for your loss.
Dr. Krivit will always be special to me - and I will miss him as my doctor and friend.

Dear Family of William Krivit: I am saddened by the news of the death of Bill Krivit. As a colleague who enjoyed many interesting and stimulating encounters with Bill, I was always amazed at his energy and enthusiasm at the many meetings we attended. We had stimulating discussions in Salt Lake City at the Genetics meeting in October. I had looked forward to seeing him again last week at the meeting on Newborn Screening in Bethesda, and I was hoping his absence was due to him having a better offer. I was honored to be the 2004 speaker at the William Krivit Lectureship in Pediatrics. As expected, Bill’s hand went up first after my lecture and he asked a tough question just to put me on the spot. I enjoyed our scientific “tangles” very much. He always kept us thinking and defending our views. I will miss him. Please accept my condolences for your loss. Respectfully yours, David Wenger

Dear Family of Dr. Krivit,
As a college buddy of Dr. Krivit's son Dan, I remember him fondly as a great dad who --with his wife -- raised a fantastic foursome of kids. Whether it was piloting the waterski boat at "Camp Krivit", skippering a sailboat with the family in the Virgin Islands, or just trying to rein in only the most outlandish ideas of us crazy college kids, Dr. Krivit always seemed to do it with passion, grace, and a smile. The Krivit household dining room table was never too small to accommodate another guest, and the house always ready for another sleeping bag.
On behalf of my own family I offer our love and sympathy to Dan, his family, and all the extended Krivit family. Our thoughts are with you.
Love,
Dave Phillips

To the Krivit Family:
Nancy and I send our sincere condolences to you all in your loss.
I will always remember Dr. Krivit, his generosity and his good-spirited curmudgeon-like sense of humor. From the first we met, my sophomore year in college, he treated me like family. On several occasions he welcomed me into his home, "Kamp Krivit", for some of the most memorable times of my life. Later, when my career took me into biology research, we even had the chance to "talk shop" a few times. I will miss him.
My sympathies to you all,
Virginia Keranen

Dear Krivit family, Our son Jonathan was diagnosed with ALL in December of 1973. Dr. Krivit was his doctor and he is forever in our hearts and minds. God gave Dr. Krivit the wisdom to treat our son and we thank Him everyday for the knowledge He gave to Dr. Krivit. On a brighter side, we loved Dr. Krivit and his ways. One day as he walked into the clinic I talked to him and said, "Dr. Krivit, you look tired." He walked out of the clinic and came back in with a smile on his face and said, "How do I look now?" He was there for me with answers to questions whenever I needed him. We lived in Alaska for awhile and he still was there for me. We as a family know that his family gave a lot for him to be so helpful to his "children's" families. Jonathan visited Dr. Krivit a short while ago while he was in the hospital, shortly after he was diagnosed with his final illness.
Dr. Krivit will be remembered by us as a very important part of the family. Thank you to the Krivit family and our sympathy.

My wife Teryn and I are so deeply impacted by the loss of such a compassionate man, a passionate researcher, a thorough teacher, and an inspiration to so many. Above all, he was a great friend.
I am sure that we are not alone in the impact that he had on our family. He treated our daughter, Darcee, in the fall of 1995 for MLD. Darcee loved to see him each day in clinic and we treasure the tie that he gave her one day simply because she said that she loved it. He was the grandpa in her last days that she never had.
He inspired us to form the MLD Foundation where he remained both an encourager and a trusted advisor as we built relationships with those researching and suffering from MLD. He spoke at two of our family conferences. He was an active participant on our MLD email discussion list where he helped hundreds of families from around the world.
We are sure there are literally thousands of similar stories where everyone he touched was blessed by some sort of a special relationship with Bill.
We miss him and will always respect his contribution to mankind. We offer our prayers to Chyrrel and the rest of his family – for I know he loved all of you more than his work. Please know that the sacrifice that you made when he as away from you was so greatly appreciated.

To the Family of Dr. Krivit:
Please accept our most sincere sympathies on your recent loss. Our family is forever grateful to your husband/father/grandfather. Our son Michael was diagnosed with Hurler's Syndrome in 1994. Dr. Krivit was Michael's primary physician for two bone marrow transplants and his subsequent follow-up care. He truly cared for his patients and their families. We always felt that Dr. Krivit treated Michael like he was his grandson. It is only through the ground-breaking work of this amazing man that Michael will be celebrating his 13th birthday in May. We will truly miss his presence in our lives. May God continue to bless you.
Respectfully yours,
Kevin, Kathy, Megan, and Michael Sheridan

My sincere sympathies to Dr. Krivit's family on their loss. He was a caring, kind-hearted, and gifted doctor who always thought of his little patients and their teddy bears. At age 2 (in 1952), I was critically ill with Hemolytic Anemia and not expected to recover. Because of Dr. Krivit and his work, I have been blessed with life and family. He will be dearly missed and forever in my heart. Love Cindy Ashe Johnson
