Edward FASHINGBAUER Obituary

On June 20, 2014 Preceded in death by beloved wife Ann, parents Barbara and Joseph, sister Barbara and brother Robert. Lovingly missed by children Edward H., Claudia, Drew, Clio (Carl) McLagan, Anne (Tom) Howard, David, Gael (Rob) Cooper. Also survived by grandchildren Erin, Molly and Maggie McLagan; April, Christian and Heidi Fashingbauer; Josh (Samantha), Annie (Mark) Miller and Samantha Howard; and Kelly Cooper; 4 (going on 5) great-grandchildren; brother Thomas (Dottie), sister-in-law Maureen, dear cousin Lois (Frank) Belrose and many close friends and relatives. Special thanks to the staff at Lyngblomsten Care Center. Mass 11 a.m. Wednesday (June 25) with visitation one hour prior at CHURCH OF ST. ODILIA, 3495 Victoria St N., Shoreview. A Rice Street boy, Ed was president of the class of 1939 at Washington High School and a star athlete who graduated from Hamline University. Rumors are that classmate LeRoy Neiman once drew a picture of Ed in a sports pose, but unfortunately for family bank accounts, such a drawing was never found. Ed joined the Marines during World War II, taking part in the Battle of Okinawa, the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific War. Ed later said that war movies showing beautiful palm trees waving over a tropical beach were all Hollywood, for during the war, he never saw a palm that wasn't shattered. Ed was a businessman by day, but came home to his White Bear Lake farm by night, hung up his suit jacket and threw hay to his horses. He never met a piece of wood he couldn't craft into something beautiful, had a soft spot for any and all animals, and stayed loyal to Minnesota sports teams in bad times and in worse. He would've liked the Minnesota Vikings to be his pallbearers, so they could let him down one last time. Semper fi.

Sweet Uncle Ed. And, the coolest Uncle. Handsome & rugged...a local cowboy. May he rest now in peace with Aunt Ann. Thinking of all of you - such a great family.
Love to all of you!

Uncle Ed, always had a hugh smile on his face and made everyone around him feel like they were always at home, even at someone else home. He was truly one of the best guys to know, he will be missed by all that knew him, but we were the lucky ones to know him. Love ya Uncle Ed

A great guy who always had an opinion on everything and was not easily persuaded. He was adamant that his grandson, Josh Howard, was a better ball player than Joe Mauer. The last few years were difficult for him regarding being separated from the love of his life, Ann. Listening to him talk to her on the phone was like listening to a teenage boy in love. He relished his sauerkraut, homemade pickles, and cousin Marge's German dumplings. Last year at Lyngblomsten's, I told him I realized how many sacrifices he had made to raise his seven kids, but now he was reaping the rewards of that investment by having the loving support of those offspring while others at the same facility had not seen or heard from their family for years. Ed, we will pay it forward with love as you and Ann did.

Ann,

You have my deepest sympathy on the death of your Dad. I only met him one time at your birthday party when we were in the eighth grade. He seemed real happy with a big smile on his face when he looked at you.

As the chapters of my life are being recalled, memories of Uncle Ed, his snappy attitude and saying things that were straight and true has stuck with me. He always seemed to get along with everybody and was always a welcome addition to Votel family events and activities. That in itself is a great memory. He was always nice to me and my family.
