Olivia Tomasson Obituary

October 29, 1933 - October 17, 2011 Olivia passed away suddenly at the age of 77. Olivia loved, and was loved deeply by, her daughters Jill (Dave), Nancy, Patti (Ron), grandchildren Erik, Paul, Adam, Sarah, Hannah, and brothers Kris (Patricia) and Norman (Rhonda), sister-in-law Vicki (Ken), six nephews and nieces and many other relatives and friends. Olivia was predeceased by her husband Harvey, brother Hjortur and son-in-law Dave. Education and social justice were Olivia's passions. She loved welcoming new immigrants to Canada and taught English as a Second Language at Vancouver Community College. Olivia was active in the Point Grey Neighbourhood Ministry providing food, clothing, friendship and comfort for the homeless. One of her greatest accomplishments was co-founding the first Canadian community-based hospice to ensure respect and care for the dying and their families. A celebration of her life will be held Thursday October 27 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Philip's Anglican Church, 3737 West 27th Ave, Vancouver, followed by a reception in the church hall. Olivia was a much loved long time member of our Wednesday Walking Group. A very thoughtful and caring woman, she is missed and fondly remembered.

Olivia was a cherished member of St. Philip's and the Dunbar community. Her loss is keenly felt.

On a personal note, I will miss her especially at Christmas Fayre time - she was an important member of our "Attic Treasures" team - always there with a smile to dig in and help in any way asked.

Above all else she loved and was very proud of her family, especially her grandchildren - they will miss her very much but should grow up knowing that they were so treasured by their grandmother.

To Patti and all her family - may you find peace in the days ahead and solace in the knowledge that your mother was loved by so many - her spirit and legacy will live on.
