Lisa Bernhardt Obituary

Lisa Marie Roth Bernhardt of Moorpark, California passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014 after an 8 month courageous fight with lung and brain cancer. She was 41 years old.

Born Lisa Marie Roth, she came into this world on June 26, 1973, daughter of Frederick and Deanna Roth of Thousand Oaks, California. She attended Meadows Elementary, Colina Junior High, Westlake High School and graduated from Moorpark College.

Lisa's lifepath led her into the veterinary care field, becoming first a laboratory technician, then an award winning sales representative and finally into a management position for Victor Medical Supplies. She dedicated her life to the support and care of all animals, which included her involvement in pet adoption events and assisting in the development and organization of many new veterinary hospitals.

Family activities, such as camping and hiking, were a high point in Lisa's life. She enjoyed getting together socially with her friends and business colleagues whenever possible. Just recently she took a trip to Hawaii, which included a memorable experience of swimming with sea turtles. She collected all kinds of turtle memorabilia, wherever she traveled.

Lisa is survived by her husband, Christopher Bernhardt, son, Randy Barker, parents, Frederick and Deanna Roth, brother, Christopher Roth (Michelle), brother-in-law, Michael Bernhardt, sister-in-law, Amanda Smith (Jeff), nieces, Mickayla Smith, Sierra Bernhardt, Kiersten Roth, nephew, Anthony Smith, parents-in-law, Mickey and Bob Bernhardt, along with aunts, uncles and cousins.

Lisa was a sweet, caring, hardworking young lady, always ready to lend a helping hand. She was generous with love and understanding, gathering friends wherever she went in life. She was the model of a perfect daughter, wife, mother and sister, and will be missed forever by everyone who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lisa's name to her favorite charities found at vetmed.ucdavis.edu and fixnation.org Services will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Pierce Brothers Memorial Park, Westlake Village (805-495-0837). An offsite reception will follow from 12- 2 pm.

Fred Roth

November 10, 2014

An open letter from Lisa's parents Fred and Deanna Roth:

Lisa Marie Roth came to us on June 26, 1973. From birth she stood out as a unique person. She was strong willed and could be a challenge to both of us from time to time. She was curious, forthright, happy, full of energy and from the start, her love for everyone, especially animals, was noteworthy. Her first pets were a pair of tri-colored guinea pigs, she named Harriet and Bob. She watched over, and saw that everything needed for her little friends were taken care of every day. Her kindness towards all animals sometimes caused issues, especially when some lost creature would follow her home. Many times this led to family adoptions, if they could not be placed back in their homes.

Her early teenage years were sometimes tumultuous. Lisa could stand up to any person or adversity that beset her. Many a boy, who made the mistake of getting under her skin, would end up the recipient of bruises as payment for their misdeeds. She also had the verbal skills to stand up to the best of them, including her old man. Another attribute Lisa had was her sales skills, partially generated by the self confidence she had when dealing with people. The way we discovered this talent was one Sunday, when her brother and Fred took her to the Pomona Swap Meet, where they set up a space to sell antique car parts. Around noon, Chris and Fred went to buy some lunch, as well as check out some of the other stalls at the show. They left Lisa alone, telling her to watch that our items were not stolen. Upon returning over an hour later, they were horrified to see about 1/3 of their items were missing. Thinking she had not been watching the items as asked, dad angrily said, "Lisa, Where did all my stuff go?" "I sold them," she replied looking him straight in the eye. "What did you, do give them away?" he responded. "No!" she replied, "They paid just what you had marked on them." As she said that, she flashed a sizable roll of cash at him. "How the heck did you do that?" he responded. "I don't know, " she said. In order to find out, we stood back and watched in amazement as she sold a few more items, all to young males we might add! The way she used her remarkable good looks, pleasant conversation, and maybe a little fluttering of the eyes, we knew we had a true salesperson on our hands.

Soon after Lisa graduated from high school, all of these positive traits merged together when she went to work in a veterinary clinic. Her love for animals, humans, the ability to stand up to the best of them, as well as her sales skills and good looks, merged into one terrific young lady. Having been the parents, who had dealt with those teenage years and lots of boys, we couldn't believe our eyes. Our little sweetie had grown to be a terrific, strong human being, as well as a fantastic loving mother to her only child, Randy. We couldn't have been any prouder. As the years rolled by, Lisa continued to grow, and we were amazed at how hard she worked, and the amount of empathy she had for everyone she came in contact with, whether at work or daily life. Whatever the problem, Lisa could take it on and solve it.

When she was diagnosed with cancer in January 2014, she faced the problem with the same mature resolve she always had. Even as the cancer progressed at an alarming rate, she kept her chin up and kept fighting. She continued working for her company Victor Veterinary Supplies and seemed more worried about taking care of her customers than the issues with this terrible disease. When her dad spent a stint in the hospital, her focus was 100% on his well being, rather than all her cancer challenges. The cancer spread from her lungs to the brain, and finally progressing to her adrenal gland. The results of this vicious devil caused her to lose most of her motor skills when the cancer wrapped around her spine. Still, she had friends drive her around to her customers, to be sure all was well with them. It wasn't until the last several weeks, when she had her stroke and was unable to use the limbs on her right side, that she slowed down. Even then, she had her husband drive her over to our home for the very sad task of saying good bye to us. She passed quietly on Sept 28, 2014.

We were left with a rage that such a beautiful child could have been taken from us at the very prime of her life. The rage was tempered by the love that had poured out from friends, and yes, customers, during her memorial ceremony. Add to that, the fact that our pride in being blessed with such a wonderful daughter came to light even more. As long as we remain on this earth, her memory will be with us always to comfort us. We love you so much, dear Lisa.

Lisa was and always will always be an amazing person. She was a great friend and my first girlfriend...in 5th grade ....although i think we never actually had a date and maybe held hands once. :0)
She had an infectious smile and I can only remember that smile when I think of her. I ran into her maybe 5-6 years ago at Jury duty and she was so happy about her current life. She had her son Randy and her Husband Chris. She was successful in the Veterinarian world and I was so happy for her. She was and is one of those people that you just want to run into in life because she brings so much to the proverbial table.
Fred and Deanna I am so sorry for you loss. You raised the most amazing woman who impacted many.
Chris Roth, I am still floored by this whole thing. You are a brother to me. We have known each other since I was just a little kid so this hurt is so deep for me. I love you brother and will always be here for you.
Chris Bernhardt I have not met you yet but, I have heard amazing things about you as a husband, brother in law and Father. I am so glad that Lisa got to spend that amazingly sweet time with you because from what I have heard and can see you truly made her shine. Thank you for honoring her as the amazing person she was.
Randy... I also have never met you but, your mom was an amazing person. I lost my father at the same age so I understand your hurt and confusion. Be true to yourself and make your mother proud. Don't lash out in anger for it easy to do(I am not saying you have or will but that is what I experienced with my own life). You have family who loves you so much. Now is the time to bond together. I blamed myself for not being there when my father died but I realized I was beating myself up over something that I couldn't change. Move ahead with your life and live to make your mother proud. Embrace life; for all those who loved your mom by default are there for you as well. Lisa will be gone but never forgotten in my life for she will always be my childhood friend.

You are with me every day I when I work. You are with me when I laugh. You are with me when I am disheartened. You are with me every time I touch Fletcher's collar that you gave him 12 years ago...yes, it still fits!
You are the shining angel who reminds us to be the best we can be. You will never, ever be forgotten. Chris, Randy, Mr &Mrs. Roth, Chris &Michelle, my heart is forever touched by her spirit.

Lisa will be missed terribly. The world has lost a truly remarkable person. To her family, as I am sure you can see from the overwhelming messages and prayers, Lisa touched the hearts and lives of so many. I know that I would not be where I am today without her support and confidence in me and for that I am eternally grateful. She was my Webster rep and then became my friend and Patterson coworker. She will certainly never be forgotten as long as I am here. I feel so blessed to have known her. My most heart felt condolences to you, her family.

What a radiant person inside and out! I only knew Lisa briefly but she was one of those people that once acquainted, you could pick up right where you left off whenever you saw her again. She was always smiling and her love for her family was written all over her. She will never be forgotten and the world is a shabbier place without her. What a beautiful soul. Love to the Roth and Bernhardt family and deepest sympathy.

I would not be where I am today without Lisa Bernhardt. As a new vet school grad, I often asked her for career advice. Several years later, Lisa convinced me to start a practice. This was NOT in my original plan, but I had complete trust in her keen sensibility and judgment. And who could resist her winning personality? Over lunch one day, she singlehandedly named our hospital and got the ball rolling. Without her, the Animal Health Care Center would not exist. She is one of my greatest mentors, and I will never forget what she did for me.
Lisa battled cancer with dignity and her usual sense of humor. Her positive outlook is truly an inspiration. May we all remember her fondly and be grateful for having known her. She made an impact on all our lives.

Our thoughts are with you and your family.
