CHARLES A. BOHRER

Medical Director, CIA

Dr. Charles A. Bohrer (Age 86), a physician who retired as Director of the Office of Medical Services in 1980, after 28 years of service with the Central Intelligence Agency, died February 21, 2007 at Alexandria Hospital.

A native of West Plains, MO, Dr. Bohrer completed his undergraduate work at the University of Missouri and received his M.D. degree from George Washington University in 1946. Following his internship and active military duty as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, he was in private general practice in Arlington, VA for five years before joining the Medical Office of the Central Intelligence Agency. He was assigned to Europe for several years, and on returning to the United States, entered residency training in psychiatry at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington, DC and completed training at George Washington University Hospital in 1961. Returning to the CIA, Dr. Bohrer held various positions in the medical office including Deputy Director of the office for several years and Director for the last five years of his service.

Dr. Bohrer was awarded the intelligence medal of merit, the agency's third highest award. At the

time of his retirement he was awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Medal, the agency's second highest award for contributions in establishing and enlarging the scope of medical office programs. Dr. Bohrer had a special interest in the motivation and psychology of defectors. Following his retirement in 1980, he worked as a consultant to the medical office until 1995.

Past membership includes the Medical Society of Virginia, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Medical Association. Dr. Bohrer was licensed to practice medicine in Virginia, Florida and Missouri.

Survivors include his wife, Doris S. Bohrer of Alexandria; son, Jason Price Bohrer of Greensboro, NC; daughter-in-law, Carol Searles Bohrer; and two grandchildren, Jason Price Bohrer, Jr. and Emily Walker Bohrer; and a sister, Jean Bohrer Davidson of West Plains, MO.

Funeral service will be held at the Fort Myer Chapel on April 11 at 3 p.m. with burial in the Columbarium. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
