Dear Janet and Caroline,
Words are of little comfort in the face of the huge loss you have suffered. Please know that you are in our thoughts, and that there is light ahead, and, moreover, that David lives on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.
Much love,
Felicity, Guy, Lydie, Cary and Axie

Dear Janet and Caroline,
Alex called me with the sad news on Sunday, but it took a couple of
days for it to sink in. We have lost such a wonderful friend. He will
be deeply missed, but his friends will also be thankful for the time we
had with him. I will remember his cheerfulness, his kindness and his
wide-ranging intellect. I loved chatting with David in his library and
was amazed to find the leading work in my fields on his shelves, not
there for show but fully digested and appreciated. Above all I will
remember his fantastic talent for bringing together interesting people.
Staunton Hill always seemed full of talented, lively people – it was
never dull. Few people these days are really unique. David had this
gift in abundance and was so gracious in sharing it with us. I will
remember him with a smile.

Dear Janet and Caroline,
I was so very sorry to learn today about David's passing. When I had the pleasure of meeting with you in your Georgetown home several years ago, I was so taken with David's erudition, composure and wry sense of humor. May the memory of all the good that he did for family, friends and country be a continuing blessing.

Dear family and friends, I'm sorry to read about your loss. I hope that all can find comfort in the following words of Isaiah 33:24, "[God] will actually swallow up death forever, and certainly will wipe out every tear from their eyes..."
