Elise Ferber Obituary

FERBER, ELISE VAN HOOK (Age 86)

Of Boston, formerly of Washington, D.C. on November 15, 2001. She was born October 15, 1915 in New York, NY, the daughter of LaRue Van Hook and Edith vom Baur Van Hook. She attended schools in New York City and in Switzerland and Germany, and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Smith College, class of 1937. Following graduation, she worked for a number of years at the Musuem of Modern Art. After the death of her husband, Frederick V. Ferber, Jr. in 1950, she moved to the Washington, D.C. area, worked briefly for the American Institute of Architects and joined the staff of the National Gallery of Art. She worked there for more than 30 years holding a number of positions including Museum Curator, serving as Assistant to the Chief Curator and for 15 years Curator in charge of the Art Information Service. During her final years at the National Gallery she gathered information on exhibitions since the Gallery's inception in 1941 through 1989, for the Gallery Archives. She retired in 1989 moved to Boston, MA where she volunteered for several years at the Museum of Fine Arts. She is survived by two children, Stephen L. Ferber of East Hardwick, VT and Cornelia V.H. Potter of Boston. Also survived by two granddaughters, Diana L. Potter and Lydia L. Potter of Boston and a sister, Mrs. Katrina V.H. Taylor and a niece, Joanna Taylor Ostle, both of Chevy Chase, MD. As an expression of sympathy memorial contributions may be made to the GRACE Arts Program, (Grass Roots Arts and Community Effort), P.O. Box 960, Hardwick, VT 05843.
