MARY GRIFFIN Obituary

GRIFFIN MARY COLVIN GRIFFIN Died peacefully on July 19, 2018 at the age of 91 with her daughter Penny by her side. Predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Jim Griffin, she is survived by her daughters, Mary Colvin Griffin of Los Angeles, CA and Penny Mickum (Brent) of Bethesda, MD; her granddaughter, Laura McNamara (Brendan) of New York City and grandson, Drew Mickum of Bethesda. Mary grew up in Snow Hill, NC and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill where she met her future husband. Long-term residents of Bethesda, they also lived in Tokyo, Japan from 1957 to 1960 and in London, Englandfrom 1967 to 1972 where Mary was President of the Embassy Wives. Taking advantage of their location, they enjoyed traveling extensively. After raising her daughters, Mary became a real estate agent with Stuart & Maury Realtors. Her career blossomed and she thrived in her new profession, forging friendships with many clients over the years. She was also an active member of the Washington Town Committee chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in North Carolina. Gifted with artistic, creative, musical, and culinary talents, Mary played jazz piano (her favorite genre), wrote satirical political lyrics, pairing them with familiar tunes, and singing them with verve as she accompanied herself on the piano. She hand painted beads, making necklaces with them, and spent countless hours making exquisite decoupage lamps. She demonstrated sewing skills on her Singer sewing machine, making window treatments for one daughter, bedding for another, a life-sized doll for her granddaughter and a still-treasured quilt for her grandson. An accomplished cook, her most memorial masterpiece was chicken galantine. A colorful character known and admired for her quick wit and sassy personality, she was (and proud of it) "no bore." But, most of all, she was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend who will be missed by everyone. A private service will be held in Snow Hill, NC, followed by a celebration of Mary's life held locally at a later date. For inquiries, please contact [email protected].
