MARYELLEN EICHENWALD Obituary

EICHENWALD MARYELLEN McPEAK ATKINSON EICHENWALD Maryellen McPeak Atkinson Eichenwald "aka Mame" was an entrepreneur, designer, hostess extraordinaire, football fan, volunteer and friend to many. She died of congestive heart failure in Alexandria, VA on February 12, 2022 at age 85. Maryellen will always be lovingly remembered. She is survived by her son Timothy C. House and wife Susan House of Seattle, WA and brother JB McPeak of Lenox, MA. Her daughter Debora Bengtsson of Stockholm, Sweden preceded her in death. Grandchildren include Quinelle Studley and Keaton House of Seattle, also Linea Malgrud of Stockholm, Sweden. Great-grandchildren are Jaide and Gavin Studley of Seattle and Mathilda Malgrud of Stockholm. She was well known as founder of Mon Petit Chou in Menlo Park, CA, one of the oldest baby boutiques in the U.S. She owned and directed it for nearly 20 years. Its original mission was to be "a palace of perfection for the well-dressed infant." However, the Maryellen McPeak Jennison label also found its way to high-end boutique clothing, gifts and toys. Her mouse and Humpty Dumpty plush toys still are surfacing on Etsy and eBay as "rare" collectibles. Among her clients were the families of football legends Joe Montana and Jim Plunkett and a member of the British royal family. She also did design work for one of the Dynasty sets. Her black-tie dinner parties were legendary - in part because of her background as food and beverage manager at the four-star Drake Hotel in New York City. During her years on the San Francisco Peninsula, she was a member of the Peninsula Volunteers, whose mission is to help seniors age in place. She moved to her much-loved Washington, DC in 1997 where her gatherings remained truly memorable. She was very active in donating her time to various organizations namely The Army/Navy Club, Walter Reed Society, Inc, The Sulgrave Club, the Russian ball, and was a long-time Women's Committee member for the annual Lombardi Gala to benefit the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Maryellen was the widow of Harry Wald (Hans Eichenwald), a former president of Caesars Palace, and architectural engineer Wade Hampton Atkinson, who was project manager for the restoration work on the Jefferson Memorial faade. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Maryellen Atkinson Eichenwald and mailed to Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University, Office of Development, 2115 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite #500. Washington, DC 20007. A memorial Service will be held at Arlington Cemetery at a later date.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Maryellen Atkinson Eichenwald and mailed to Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University, Office of Development, 2115 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite #500. MaryEllen was a good friend and helped me get my flower shop off the ground. I tried finding her for the past few years and even went to Menlo Park looking for her to no avail. So sorry to hear of her passing, she had lived a wonderful life. She is missed. RIP dear friend.

Dearest Family and Friends,
I just heard of Maryellen´s passing and wanted you to know that I loved her for the brief time I knew her while she was married to my friend Wade Atkinson. I visited on many occasions, during holidays and and presidential inaugural festivities. She was the ultimate hostess as I stayed in her home and also the down to earth friend when we `let our hair down´ as we say in the south. She called me her `Southern Bell´ and I called her my `Beautiful Mame´. My most sincere sympathy and prayers for the family. I was there in her home just two days before Wade passed suddenly. What a legacy of an exciting life well lived.

I shall always remember the wonderful visits I had with Maryellen over the past 20+ years after she married my fraternity brother, Wade Atkinson. They were always joyous occasions that brought me into a different world of class and distinction. I fervently hope the frequent phone calls I made to her as she neared the end of her life were of some help and comfort. I will miss her; she was a forever person.

SUI GENERIS--Latin for "ONE OF A KIND" describes Mame.
She was beautiful, brilliant, outrageous, vital and vibrant - a life force! Mame was our dear, treasured and unforgettable friend who will forever be in our hearts.
