The one and only time I saw Fred was at the Valley of McAlester Orient of Oklahoma, when my father joined me at the reunion of the fall of '98 when I was accepted in the Scottish Rite, S.J., as did my father in June '60. He was a beloved man, and shall always be forever missed. He gave the class, each a medallin of the 196th anniversary, from the Supreme Council. He changed the ways of Freemasonry, from when my grandfather and dad went through, for the next generations to follow. Richard D. Welch (Lone Grove, Ok.)

I first saw Fred in action before a committee of the District government in 1978 and knew he was special. Later, I came to know him through his son Scott and daughter-in-law Ellen. My earlier impression was reaffirmed. He led a thinking and doing life that confronted barriers and expanded horizons for thousands. And in his retirement, he was willing to do more. Through his long and distinguished career as a leader in Scottish Rite Masonry, he built healing institutions and traditions, fostered reconciliation between Americans and set a very high standard for community service and integrity. He has many legacies; at the top of the list is a family that carries on his vision. I offer them, and his brothers in freemasonry, my condolences.

Our family offers condolences to the family of this fine man. Fred embraced life and made the world a better place wherever he went. He was an optimist and hard worker who took pride in his nation and his family. He lived a full life, and his legacies will endure.
