Raphael Condry Obituary

Passed on January 7, 2026. Raphael Joseph Condry, lovingly known as Joe, was born on July 28, 1941, to Dr. Elizabeth Dearian Condry and Dr. James A. Condry. He lived a life marked by service, generosity, and a deep love for family, learning, and flight. Joe is survived by his two brothers, John Thomas Condry and James Dearian Condry, as well as his cherished nieces and nephews; James, Mary Beth, Mark, Jennifer, Melody, Crystal, and Mary who will remember him for his wisdom, humor, and steady presence. Joe's commitment to education began early. He graduated from St. Brendan Elementary School in 1955 and Elkins High School in 1959. That same year, on August 13, 1959, he took his first solo flight—an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for aviation. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia University in 1965. In his early professional life, Joe served as a chemistry teacher at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School from 1966 to 1968. He later worked for United Airlines as a customer service representative before returning to school, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting with high honors in 1976. His dedication to professional excellence continued with the completion of his MBA from Strayer College in 1993. Joe went on to become a Certified Fraud Examiner and financial services auditor for the United States Marine Corps, a role in which he served with distinction. While working at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, Joe survived the attack—an experience that profoundly shaped his perspective on life and gratitude. He later retired from the Marine Corps after a long and accomplished career in public service. Faith was an important part of Joe's life. He was baptized into the Catholic Church in 1941 and later into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1978, reflecting his spiritual journey and openness to growth and understanding. His faith was expressed through a personal relationship with God and a life guided by goodness. Joe was known for his love of walking—so much so that his neighbors affectionately called him "Speedy." He loved flying and owned a plane, finding joy and freedom in the skies. He also loved to travel, with Okinawa Japan holding a special place in his heart. Joe was a generous man at his core, always making sure everyone was taken care of. He helped his brother John grow the family business and selflessly cared for his mother, Elizabeth, for many years. Joe also had a gift for bringing people together and was happiest serving as the master of ceremonies at pool parties. True to his nature, Joe was often the one behind the camera, capturing moments rather than appearing in them. While there may be few photos or videos of him, the memories he created and the lives he touched are lasting and profound. Raphael Joseph Condry will be remembered as a devoted son, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend—a man of integrity, intellect, adventure, and kindness. His legacy lives on in the family he loved, the people he helped, and the skies he so dearly cherished. *The family will gather privately for Joe's burial and in lieu of condolences, please consider honoring his memory by helping someone in need.
