JONATHAN HORVATH Obituary

HORVATH JONATHAN A. HORVATH Jonathan A. Horvath, 40, of Washington, DC, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2015 in Kamloops, British Columbia, after a brief illness. Affectionately known as Jono, he was deeply loved by his family and friends. Jono was an accomplished DJ, an avid electronic composer and co-founder of the DC-based record label Fort Knox Recordings. His numerous loyal fans and colleagues in music knew him as "DJ JonH." Born in Bloomington, Indiana in 1975 to Karen and Jules Horvath, Jono spent much his childhood overseas - Korea, Great Britain, Ivory Coast - and later in Reston, Virginia where he graduated from South Lakes High School in 1993. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan College before discovering the joys of electronic music, drum and base and funk in the mid-1990s. From then on Jono channeled his boundless energy and passion for music into a new career as a DJ, working relentlessly to find and share his sound. His devotion to creating and performing music culminated in the founding, along with several partners, of Fort Knox Five in 2003. The label is distinguished for its groundbreaking funk and soul sound and frequent collaborations with guest artists. To share his music, Jono toured extensively all over North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In 2005 he was opening DJ on Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Lovers Tour throughout North America. He frequently appeared at prominent festivals including Burning Man, the Merritt Music Festival, Shambalaa and local favorites like Eighteenth Street Lounge and Tropicalia in DC, bringing joy to his fans. Jono received much praise and recognition from fans and fellow DJs for his creativity and ability to energize his audience. As one of his DJ colleague's eloquent tribute observes: Jono's "passion, his humor and his charisma helped to define and connect the entire scene. He was a rockstar with none of the trappings. A ravenous musical explorer and a fiercely self-critical perfectionist at his craft;...the central, charismatic driving force in an underground movement that seemed to be gamely struggling against the global grain of mainstream music." Jono married, Pamela Mason of Squamish, British Columbia, in 2007. In Pamela, Jono found a soul mate and an adventurous creative partner who shared his passion for music, travel and long hikes with their dog Mika in the wilderness of British Columbia. Pamela passed away in late 2011. Jono, a loving son and brother, is survived by his father Jules Horvath of Reston, VA and Adam Horvath and family of Chevy Chase, MD. His affectionate presence, cheerful vitality, sense of humor and readiness to help others will be deeply missed. His spirit lives on in his music and in the hearts of his loyal fans. A gathering to celebrate Jono's life will be held at the Eighteenth Street Lounge,1212 18th St., NW, Washington, DC 20036, on Tuesday, November 10, at 4 p.m., followed by a brief reception. The family plans to organize a memorial service with Jono's West Coast and Canadian friends in 2016 at Tofino on Vancouver Island, Canada. Those who wish to make a donation in memory of DJ JonH may do so to MusicCares (https://www.grammy.org/musicares/donate).

It’s still hard to believe that Jonathan, who was so young and vibrant, is no longer with us. Especially since we had so many good shared memories in Abidjan and since he was someone who was always so happy to see my wife Stephanie and me and someone with whom we always enjoyed reminiscing. His mom and dad, Karen and Jules, are with Jonathan in the next realm, and we are grateful to still have Jonathan’s older brother Adam to share with us our many fond memories of the three of them.

Jules: We were greatly saddened to hear about Jono. He clearly was a very special person. While I saw him only occasionally over the years (well, after Seoul), I do remember what a nice kid he was and how interesting and engaging he was to talk to as an adult.

It was always a pleasure for us to hear how you and Karen described what an accomplished and talented DJ he became. You and Adam have our deepest sympathies.

Dear Jules and Adam, We remember Jonathan well from our time together in Abidjan (1984-85). As a boy and as a man, he exuded an openness, brightness, and positive energy that made him immediately likeable. We all want to know more people Jonathan, but they are indeed rare. Please accept our profound condolences on Jonathan's passing, which is a loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Mike & Stephanie Petty

you a real G you know that, bruv? truly. it took you no more than thirty seconds to understand the artist in me, the journalist in me, the DC in me. the funk, the reggae, the hiphop, the gogo. your dance floor was my favorite most comfortable place to let loose. a judgement-free-zone. i hope they pressurized the cabin as you blasted off to heaven, and i hope pam was there to greet you with a lei of magical flowers and lead you to the rave in the sonic forest. your presence on earth was inspiring, and your departure, a deeply profound and unexpected chapter ending. and even though your role has ended in this script, jon, each and every witness has been affected. you are something that will never leave any of us. from those that had lengthy conversations with you. to those who know nothing more than the subtle smile, bouncing curls, and eyes peering over eyeglasses and dj booth alike. to me, you were a master of dropping beats in perfect time after a quick analysis of the vibes shaking down on the dance floor. rolling a bass break out, before setting the roof on fire, solely to usher in a remixed and rare biz markie track that we've all forgotten and now in half a second have fallen in love with all over again. you achieved a rare, undefinable skill-set, insatiable to dance-music-connoisseurs. legendary spirits never die, jon. and that's what you are, so i'll be seeing you, when i see you, just as it's always been. that divine hiding place of mine, where the lights are low and no one keeps score. where the deep bass beat meets the crowded dance floor. one love, jon. jah bless.

So sad -- hearing the news brought back a flood of memories of youthful indiscretion. We bonded over a shared connection to London while both navigating the pitfalls and challenges of boarding school. So sad. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Rest in peace my friend.
