CATHERINE HALE Obituary

Catherine Marie Hale  (neé Kenney) (Age 60)
Of Alexandria, VA, passed away March 31, 2017. Cathy is survived by her devoted husband, Richard Hale of Alexandria; her sister, MaryBeth (Kenney) Brenner of Onancock, VA; her bothers and sisters-in-law, Matthew Brenner, Jeffrey Hale, Sarah Hale, and George Story; and her nieces; nephews; god children, and friends. Cathy was devoted to all of them. Cathy was born in Philadelphia on July 15, 1956, where the Army had stationed her father. Cathy moved frequently until the 8th grade, when her family settled in Northern Virginia. She lived there the rest of her life. Cathy graduated from Fort Hunt High School in Fairfax County, then attended the University of Virginia, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and from which she graduated in 1978. She married Richard Hale at St. Mary Catholic Church in Old Town Alexandria in 1986. Cathy worked in personnel and as a meeting planner at several agencies of the Federal Government, and at a trade association, all in Washington, DC. She volunteered her time for many years at the MaRiH center in Alexandria, VA. The funeral mass for Cathy will be Monday, April 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 310 South Royal Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, with a reception to follow immediately at the Church. Friends and family are also invited to a visitation for Cathy on Sunday, April 9, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St, Alexandria, VA 22314. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the MaRiH center, 3230-B Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314

My life has been filled with so much more joy and love because of Aunt Cathy! Her appreciation and excitement about small things in day-to-day life was contagious. I love the story about how she spent one afternoon driving around and counting stoplights with Uncle Richard, just out of curiosity. I have rarely laughed so hard, smiled so much, or talked for so long as I did when she, Eileen, Uncle Richard, and I were together. Uncle Richard, you and Aunt Cathy were the people I could always trust to drop everything at a moment's notice if I needed you. I loved your adventuresome spirits that lead you to agree to a trips with us to Morocco, Spain, and Central Mexico. The list of places we have been together is so long--zoos, Williamsburg, touring museums and colonial homes, the Arboretum, Sea World, a variety of ethnic restaurants (remember the belly dancing restaurant?!), pyramids in Mexico, bazaars in Morocco, a Harbor cruise, Old Town in San Diego, ...the list just goes on and on. But even still, I think my favorite memories are of our long conversations over meals or tea. I can't imagine life without her. But, for how much joy she found in this life, I love to think about her immense joy she is currently experiencing in heaven, where there is no more sadness or pain. I love you so much, Aunt Cathy. More than I could ever express in words.

Oh, Cathy! I still see the young, pretty high school friend I knew,
in your picture. I remember you being involved in so many activities at school, and so motivated, always smiling! I pray for your easy transition to the Other Side, the side of unending, magnificent, Light and Love. I am sad for your surviving family, and their loss of you on this Earth.
Rest in peace, dear Cathy, and may God bless you all. ❤

Aunt Cathy finding beauty- San Diego 2010

Eileen Lopez

April 8, 2017

Uncle Richard- my life is more beautiful thanks to Aunt Cathy. She found beauty in every single detail around her (flowers, plates, cats, shoes.... :) ) I can only imagine her joy marveling at the indescribable beauty and love of her Creator and Savior God now. One of my sweetest childhood memories is playing Superman-Villans with you both (Aunt Cathy was a superman, while we were villans with you). And one of my sweetest adult memories is non-stop giggling about little-black-banana-man tea-kettle cover in Morocco (if, that is, you could call that an "adult" moment). There are few people I have laughed more with in life than Aunt Cathy. She loved me so, so much... she left no doubt in my mind. How could I? She found me in Texas, Spain, Morocco, San Diego, Central Mexico... She met my husband in Mexico before the rest on my family even! I was her "sweet girl". She gave the best hugs. It is with pride and love that Catherine and I carry her name (CATHERINE Megan and Eileen MARIE), because she is always a part of us. I wish I could be beside you now. Please know that even from afar I am missing her so, so much; and thanking God for her life and all the joy and love that she brought to mine. Love you bunches.
