DORNELL EDWIN WILLIAM DORNELL, SR. Edwin William "Ed/Eddie" Dornell, Sr., of Steelton, Pennsylvania, born on February 19, 1935, to the late Ruth Elizabeth Sheppard Dornell and James Max Dornell, passed away at age 83 on December 28, 2018, in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. From 1951 to 1957, Edwin served in the U.S. Navy Reserve and in the U.S. Air Force. After a stint as a Registered Medical Technologist and as a Quarantine Inspector with the U.S. Public Health Service, Edwin began a long and distinguished career with the Department of Homeland Security (Legacy INS). He retired from INS Headquarters as the Assistant Commissioner for Intelligence. During his career with the INS, Edwin served as a substitute U.S. Embassy Attaché in Ottawa, Canada, and was a regular lecturer at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. His professional assignments took him to countries in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean. His final assignment in 1989 was as a member of a White House Task Force on security and intelligence, headed by then-Vice President George H. W. Bush. Despite the heavy demands of his work, Edwin was devoted to his family. He was the beloved husband of Marian Cannon Dornell and is also survived by his son, Edwin W. (Chip) Dornell, Jr.; daughters, Daryl W. Dornell, Lisa Dornell (Robert E. Suggs), Lauren Dornell Neal, Diane K. Peeples; sister, Florence Anne Rowe and, brother David E. Dornell. He was predeceased by his brother James M. Dornell. Edwin enjoyed travels with his wife, alpine and cross-country skiing, sailing, canoeing, fishing, photography, and drawing and painting. His art will continue to be enjoyed by his family. He inspired and encouraged his six surviving grandchildren to explore their inner, creative sides. His grandchildren are Terence and Kevin Peeples, David and John Suggs and, Simone and Anthony Neal. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who have served as a source of joy and comfort. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edwin's name to The Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave, Montgomery, AL 36104 are welcome and appreciated. A memorial service is to be officiated by The Rev. Brand Eaton, D. Min. BCC, on Thursday, January 3, 2019, at 2 p.m., at Bethany Village, The Richard D. Ed was my boss while he was the Assistant Commissioner, Intelligence at INS, one of my two best bosses in a 36 year career. He was a man for all seasons, equally comfortable at work, at the opera, or in a seedy bar with the guys. He was devoted to his family. I think his family is, and should be, very proud.

Ed was my boss in the INS Office of Intelligence for a time. He was one of the two best bosses I had in 36 years. He was a gentleman and a leader, equally comfortable at work,at a seedy bar with the guys, or at the opera. And he was devoted his family. He was an example of the very best of public service. His family should be very proud.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.

Ed was always a gentleman, with an infectious smile. We fondly recall the times he visited our home in the North Country to enjoy some hunting with INS pals. Good times; good memories. When, after retirement, he and his lovely wife took a New England cruise we got to meet Marian as well. A fun, terrific day and a wonderful reunion. As the family grieves, we pray for your comfort and solace, but hope that you rejoice in the years you spent with a truly remarkable man. Joe & Maureen Donovick

We recall Eddie as a true gentleman, a smiling face. The times he came to our home in the North Country for hunting trips with INS buddies is a very fond memory. Truly good, happy times. And then when he and his lovely wife took a New England cruise and we got to meet Marian, well, that is a memory we will cherish. What a wonderful reunion! Our hearts go out to his family as they grieve his loss. But all should be consoled by the fact that for a lifetime you had the best of the best! Treasure those memories! Maureen & Joe Donovick

To the Dornell Family: We are deeply saddened by our dear friend Eddie's passing. The saying is that "the moving finger writes and, having writ, moves on...". It is obvious that the message Eddie wrote to all of us during his lifetime relates to successful careers, quality performances, dedicated friendships, strong family ties and a commitment to excellence. Our friendship has been nurtured for 80 years during which time we learned a lot from the largess of Eddie. He will be missed.
