I just learned of Fr Downing's death.
I owe so much to this man and his ministry at St James.
I first entered St James on Easter, 1983, having agreed to meet Richard Smith and Dennis Jones. It was my first time there and first at an Episcopal High Mass...Rite One, no less. Although I understood little of it, I was mesmerized and became an Episcopalian in 1984, at St James.q
What started at St James and continued until I moved to California in 2002 came from God acting and speaking through Fr. Downing. Coming out, sobriety, meeting my beloved partner, Michael Jackson.....all made possible through Fr Downing's love, devotion, profound spiritual bearing and belief.
A man, Priest for whom I owe so much, "Dickie", RIP, until we meet again.

Father Downing supervised me as a Seminarian at St James’. I will never forget his love of the liturgy and his kindness.

I owe a debt of gratitude, and of strengthened faith, to The Rev. Richard E. Downing. even though I had only met him twice during his active years as the rector of St. James Episcopal Church. For several years, and well before the merger with St. Monica, I worshiped at St. James every Sunday during the month of July. It was then that the late Rev. Ronald P. Conner, his good friend and my spiritualmentor, would fill in for Fr. Downing so that he might take a well-deserved vacation. When I returned to fellowship at his lovely little church two years ago, I found that Fr. Downing was ailing and had retired. The two Capitol Hillchurches had been united under the capable leadership of a gifted new rector, William S. Whittaker, who had the unenviable tasks of renovating the physical infrastructure and garden, while also continuing Fr. Downing's work on behalf of parishioners and the community. I prayed for Fr. Downing in illness, and now pray for the repose of his soul.May light perpetual shine upon him. May he rest in eternal peace and glory.
