Sandra Compher Obituary
Sandra Ann Compher (Sandy), 87, of Washington DC, retired English teacher (known by her students as Mrs. Belfiore) and therapist, died on Monday March 16, 2026, at the Lisner Louise Dixon Hurt Home in Washington DC surrounded by family. Sandy was born on December 15, 1938 in Oakland CA to Agnes Hein Contant and Harlan Max Compher. She was raised by her mother, her paternal grandmother, and her stepfather, Charles Contant. She had six children and was married to Joseph F. Belfiore Jr. and then to Hugh Lawrence (Larry) Logan.
Sandy was a funny and creative mom, stepmom, and friend. In the 1960s and 70s, she could be found stripping antique cabinets, decoupaging shelves, teaching silly songs, sending kids to play outside, over-explaining complex concepts, attempting to hide mom-only candy from her kids, applying "Frost and Tip by Clairol," searching for the Harlequin Romance she misplaced earlier in the day, sipping whiskey sours, or demanding "apartness-time" from any and all kids. She was fashionable and elegant. She was also not afraid to jump into the unknown, such as taking high school algebra from the math teacher while she was the school's English teacher, driving across the country in a Volkswagen with three kids in tow stopping in on distanced relatives along the way, or sledding down a hill while lying on her best friend's back when in their late 30s and laughing until she peed her pants. She valued and supported those who the world viewed as different. She had a wry sense of humor that could deliver kindness or a zing with precision.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Larry, and is survived by her children Natalia M. Belfiore, M. Nicole Belfiore (Kennedy Wright), Joseph F. Belfiore III (Hope), Tracey M. Logan (Robert Silva), Jessica Logan Marks (Paul), and Max C. Logan, her siblings Marsha L. Tucker, Charles F. Contant Jr. (Terry), and Cheryl K. Contant (Karen Mumford), and 13 grandchildren.
Donations in Sandy's memory made be made to the Lisner Louise Dickson Hurt Home. Services entrusted to Going Home Funeral Care.
