On Thursday, November 4, 2004 at Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria, VA. Ms. Kahl retired from the Alexandria Library after 23 years of service, ending her career as Coordinator of Public Service. She was also the author of 18 children's books, including "The Duchess Bakes a Cake", "Away Went Wolfgang" and "Whose Cat is That?" Ms. Kahl was born in Milwaukee, WI in 1919. She served as a U.S. Army librarian in Germany and Austria from 1948 to 1955, arriving in Berlin during the Berlin Airlift. She is survived by her nephew, Christopher Kahl, of Salt Lake City, UT; her sister-in-law, Anne Kahl of Apopka, FL; and many other friends and relatives. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 16, at Franconia United Methodist Church, 6037 Franconia Rd., Alexandria. Virginia was known for her love of cats and spent much time caring for them. In her memory, contributions may be made to The Fairfax County Humane Society, 4057 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA 22030.
