Susanne Albert Obituary

Susanne Kirkpatrick Albert, 83, of Orleans, passed away peacefully at home on May 25, 2020. She was born on East Orange, NJ on November 6, 1936 to Florence Kirkpatrick Albert (Port Jervis, NY), a member of the DAR, and Odd Per Leif Albert (Gothenburg, Sweden), a civil engineer, of East Orange and Spring Lake, NJ. She was the beloved and cherished partner of Dorothy M. (Dottie) Smith. In addition to Dottie, Susanne is survived by her brother, John W. Albert (Anita), her nephew Sam Albert (Tiyas),and her nieces Anna Albert Coppen (Donald), Julia Albert, and great nephew Marcus Coppen. She leaves many cousins in Sweden. Susanne was a graduate of Miss Beards School (now Morristown-Beard School) in Morristown, NJ, in 1954, and graduated from Vassar College in 1958. After teaching young women in private schools for several years, she followed her sense of the world and entered the Peace Corps in 1962. She was a member of Nigeria Group 5, teaching young women English and literature in Igbo Elerin, a village outside of Lagos. On her return to the US, Susanne went to Harvard University, and graduated with a Master in Education in 1966. She worked at AT&T for thirteen years, bringing her critical thinking skills and independence of thought in a number of key projects. Her work included working with AT&T corporate executives at the Corporate Policy Seminar held at Buck Hill Falls, PA. At this retreat program, AT&T executives were exposed to the thinking of outside organizations in all areas of expertise. She was an Assessor of middle management employees in the Management Assessment Program, geared towards identifying future leaders, particularly women in the ranks. She successfully developed, coordinated and facilitated the first in-depth Employee Feedback Survey program at AT&T Information Systems, resulting in critical changes within the organization. Her independent spirit and fascination with the world of finance led her to work in partnership with S. Dillard Kirby at IDS, Morristown, NJ as a Certified Financial Planner. After the company was bought up by American Express, Susanne became a stock broker in Boston, then New Jersey and finally on Cape Cod before retiring in 2006. Susanne carried on her Mothers genealogical research for the Dutch, Swedish and Scotch- Irish family lines and unearthed many new pieces of family information. As a member of the New England Historical Genealogical Society, Susanne traveled to Ireland to pursue family lines in Belfast and Dublin. Susanne maintained long term relationships with people from all areas of her work and studies. She loved to tell stories, from her family history and from her life experiences and her friends. Susanne enjoyed traveling the globe, learning about other cultures, their history and geography. She especially enjoyed cruising the Mediterranean, Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, Adriatic, Aegean, Black, Baltic, North and Norwegian Seas. I was fortunate to have worked with Susanne in the late 70's as we faced the multiple challenges that were reshaping the Bell System. That was the basis of a long lasting friendship.
Susanne was special in so many ways. She had the capacity to consider events and offer perspectives that were revealing in ways most of us had never considered. Her range of interests and friendships were rich and diverse.
Those of us who were fortunate to know and work with Susanne grew as a result of that relationship. She made a difference.
