John Hubley Obituary

John Bradac Hubley, 70, of Mashpee, formerly of Needham, died September 16, 2019 after a long illness. He was at home, surrounded by his family, including his wife of 50 years, Karen Taggart Hubley, and his daughters, Jennifer Hubley Luckwaldt and Meghan Hubley Bourque. He is also survived by his siblings, Ralph Hubley III, Elizabeth Bean, and Timothy Hubley, and their families, his sons-in-law John Bourque and Adam Luckwaldt, and his four grandchildren, Owen Bourque, Lucienne Bourque, Liam Bourque, and Katharine Luckwaldt. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Marco John Hubley, and his mother, Ethel Bradac Hubley, who tried to warn his bride about the towels that accumulated from his preferred three showers a day.. John would think that it was silly that his family is shelling out for the extended obituary, but given his love of telling stories, he has only himself to blame. Because of John, we know more than anyone ever should about tall tales, cow- boy poetry, sculpture, arcane musical instruments, magic, the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, the aircraft of World War Two, knot-tying, building camp- fires, and casting Green Men in plaster. Although its true that his family might have missed some of the details, they also learned from him never to let facts get in the way of a good story, so his family will be able to fill in the edges. Last year, he built an Adirondack guide boat, which he named Ozzies Lulu B, after his grandchildren. His family is so glad he was able to take her for her maiden voyage before he got sick. At Johns request, there will be no memorial service. If youd like to remember him, he would have wanted you to go to the beach. Heres his menu for a perfect beach lunch: one box of Wheat Thins, one block of cheddar cheese, one bunch of grapes, several cans of Diet Pepsi. Reapply your sunscreen and be sure to go on a long swim while your family nervously scans the horizon for sharks. John had a green thumb and grew every flower he ever needed, so in lieu of flowers, his family would love it if you donated to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod through the Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation.

The obituary written by his daughter is a loving tribute. The details of his favorite pastimes reflect that he knew the pursuits that make life worthwhile and pleasant for himself and everyone surrounding him.

I was lucky to share playing in the enchanted yard in St. Charles with my cousins when we were small children.
