Sally Alexander Obituary

Sally Jean Alexander ("Mrs. A" to her students) died in her home quietly in her sleep on Dec. 24, 2012. She was 84 years old. She was active as a teacher, an ardent track supporter, and as a dog trainer. Originally hired as a permanent substitute for Earth Science, Mrs. A went on to teach Freshmen and Sophomore English at Wayland High School for almost 30 years, and also served as class advisor for two graduating classes. She believed that every teacher should support a sport and chose track as her cause. She was not only a fan; but she raised the money to build a new track at the high school and was a founding member of Wayland's Wayfarers Track Club. From 1955 on, she owned several Standard Poodles and Akitas, training them to compete in Obedience Trials and winning multiple trophies. An unstoppable organizer, she also served as chief trainer, president, and treasure for the Weston Dog Training Club for many years, judging at dog shows, and produced a newsletter for the dog world. Further, she was the co-founder of ARFF ("Agility is Really Fun for Fido), and of the Pets & People Foundation to provide Pet Therapy to patients in nursing homes and hospitals. For over 50 years, Sally Alexander was married to Raymond Alexander. She is survived by a large biological and adopted family. Private interment in Linwood Cemetery was held in December. A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to her favorite charity; Running Strong for American Indian Youth (www.indianyouth.org/). Arrangements entrusted to the care of John C. Bryant Funeral Home of Wayland. For online condolences please visit www.johncbryantfuneralhome.com.

I would NOT have graduated with my WHS class of '83 without the caring support of Mrs A. She cared for all of her students, both in, and outside of the classroom!

I was privileged to have Mrs. Alexander as my English teacher for TWO years...1965 and 1966!!! She changed my life by giving me the confidence to become a writer...little did I know as a freshman and sophomore in High School how well that would serve me as an attorney, There is no other teacher in my life who I have consistently referred to as the most influential, I still remember my "interior monologues" We all loved her, and she is missed. I have such wonderful memories of my Aunt Sally. I remember how much she loved her family and friends. I always enjoyed visiting with her and had wonderful conversations about all kinds of things. She inspired me with her many passions: teaching, her dogs, and helping others in need. She will always be missed by me, her niece, and the rest of the Ary family.

Mrs. "A" was a fantastic person! Eventhough I was not really enthusiastic about the subject Elizabethan times, I can't imagine a better teacher to get me through it. She made herself always available, even at home. I am sure she had a great impact on many students careers. Thank you Sally!

Sally was my dear friend and neighbor. I'm so glad I got to know her. She helped us train our new puppy in our home four years ago and was always friendly and kind to our family. We shared many good times, stories, and laughed a lot together. I will cherish these memories forever. May you remember the times of joy in this time of sadness.
