Gloria Cottrell Obituary

Gloria Cottrell

Oconto Falls - Gloria Cottrell, 84, formerly of Oconto Falls, died April 22, 2018 after a long illness. She was born in Taylor County, Wisconsin, to Charles and Clara (Pinkert) Schwark.

She graduated from Medford High School and St. Joseph School of Nursing in Marshfield. During her rotation at Winnebago State Hospital in Oshkosh, she met her future husband, Gerald, and they married in 1955 in Medford.

While in school, she was recruited by Dr. Clyde Siefert, who was completing his internship at Marshfield, to work at Community Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls, where she worked from September 1954 until her marriage to Gerald.

The couple moved to Madison where Gerald attended the University of Wisconsin and Gloria worked as an industrial nurse for Oscar Meyer and also a private duty nurse. They studied the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses while living there.

After Gerald's graduation, they moved to Missouri, where she worked in Kansas City at Baptist Memorial Hospital in labor and delivery and Research Hospital in orthopedics. They were baptized as Jehovah's Witnesses during this time. After moving back to Wisconsin, Gloria worked at Brown County Mental Health Center in Green Bay as director of nursing from 1969-1973. They lived in Chippewa Falls and Osseo, Wisconsin for a number of years. She finished her nursing career as director of nursing at Family Heritage Nursing Home in Wisconsin Rapids where Jerry was teaching at Mid-State Technical College.

Gloria and Gerald had many friends. Their hobbies included camping, boating, fishing, and traveling, and watching the Packers. One of Gloria's favorite memories was sitting around the campfire, talking and singing with friends. They especially enjoyed a cruise to Alaska in their retirement years, again with friends.

Surviving are her children, Nancy (Jeff) Christensen, and Julie Covi; her grandchildren, Heidi (Adam) Brickner, Michael (Jinhee) Christensen, Jonathan, Cade Covi, Kitt Covi; and one great grandchild, Charlie. Also surviving are many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins, and one aunt, Irene.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald, son Michael, brothers George, Kenneth and Alan, sisters Hetty and Elaine, niece Laurie, and beloved aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 5 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 506 N. Chestnut Ave, Oconto Falls, with visitation at 1:00 pm until the service at 2:00 pm with her grandson, Michael Christensen, officiating. Gloria will be interred in Evergreen Cemetery in Algoma. Gruetzmacher Funeral Home in Suring is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences can be expressed at www.gruetzmacherfuneralhome.com.

The family would like to thank The Cottages in Oconto Falls and Heartland Hospice, especially Katie and Tina, for their love and excellent care.
