Dorothy E. Gladfelter, 98, passed away on April 24, 2016, at Country Meadows of Leader Heights. She was the wife of the late Armand L. Gladfelter.
Mrs. Gladfelter was born in Glatfelter Station in N. Codorus Twp. on June 30, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Arthur C. and Esther P. (Decker) Henry.
As a young girl, she sang with the Monk Kauffman and Roy Gibbons orchestras and also had a program of songs on the radio station WORK in the 1930s. For years, she was organist and choir director of Trinity Lutheran Church in Seven Valleys, where she founded a Junior Choir in the 1940s. At one time she was a choir member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. She was composer of the "Siebenthal Waltz" written for the second book of the history of Seven Valleys (Das Siebenthal revisited) written by her husband, Armand Gladfelter, in 1981. She and her husband also made a video tape of the history of Seven Valleys from 1892 - 1992. She was a member of the National Music Teachers Assoc. and the Pennsylvania Music Teachers Assoc., serving two terms as President. She was a member of the York Matinee Musical Club. Mrs. Gladfelter was a teacher of piano for 72 years. She was a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music of the Johns Hopkins University. She was a member of the Peabody Alumni Assoc. and the York Historical Society.
Mrs. Gladfelter is survived by nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Koller Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., 2000 W. Market St. in York. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 29, 2016 at St. Rose of Lima Church, 950 W. Market St. in York. Burial will be in Loganville U. M. Cemetery.
