W. Brougher Obituary

YORK W. Dale Brougher of Spring Garden Township passed away at home on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. He was the husband of Nancy (MacCubbin) Brougher, to whom he was married 36 years. Born August 11, 1922, in Wellsville, the son of the late W.D. Brougher and May (Cook) Brougher, he graduated in 1940 from Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. After Peddie, he was a member of the Class of 1944 of Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., and graduated from there in 1946 after returning from military service. He spent three years in the U.S. Army Air Force and ended that career as an instructor with P-47 fighter planes. Mr. Brougher was the founder and CEO of Brocker Rebar Company, Inc., founded in York, in 1949. The business grew to include five additional reinforcing steel fabricating plants in the midAtlantic region. He was also the owner of Coastal Steel Company, Inc., a steel service center company located in Baltimore, Md. In 1999, he sold the rebar operations to Gerdau-AmeriSteel, a Brazilian company, and retired. As a leader in the reinforcing steel industry, Mr. Brougher served in 19841985 as the national president of the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, the industry trade association in Chicago. Over the years, he served on the following boards: The York Symphony Orchestra, the founding board of the Strand Capital Performing Arts Center, the initial board of Junior Achievement of York County, The York Bank & Trust Company, and The York Hospital Board, where his father had also been a member. He also enjoyed being a life member of the York Fair. Currently, Mr. Brougher was a member of the boards of Adopt-a-Family and The Society of the Four Arts, both in Palm Beach, Fla. He had a passion for flying that began as a teenager and continued as a private pilot for over 60 years. He was also an avid golfer. He shared with his wife a love of dogs and gave a forever home to over 25 homeless dogs. His particular favorites were Golden Retrievers. He had a special affection for the York County SPCA and DreamWrights Youth and Family Theatre. He strongly believed in charitable giving and supported many organizations generously through The W. Dale Brougher Foundation. He was a member of The Country Club of York and The Lafayette Club in York, The Everglades Club and The Bath and Tennis Club in Palm Beach, Fla., and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and The Meadow Club in Southampton, Long Island, N.Y. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Peter C. Brougher and his wife, Nancy of York; a stepson, Robert E. Bossert of Siesta Key, Fla.; as well as five grandchildren, Heath Brougher, Megan Brougher, Katherine Noll, Richard Noll, and Sally Bossert. His beloved daughter, Ann Brougher Noll, passed away on July 15, 2006, at the age of 50. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 19, at The Brougher Chapel of York College of Pennsylvania, 441 Country Club Road in York. Friends are invited to attend a reception following the service at The Country Club of York. Private burial at Warrington Friends Cemetery in Wellsville will precede the memorial service. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St. York (the former Hahn Home), is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to either the York County SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trial, York, PA 17406; or DreamWrights Youth and Family Theatre, 100 Carlisle Ave., York, PA 17401. I worked at Brocker Steel in the 70's. He was personal, down to earth and open in conversations even with a lowly receptionist. He spoke about a movie he'd just seen "Walkabout ". Sorry for his passing. Kathy Scholes

Dale Brougher, a man who personified perseverance. When a door in life closed, Dale found a window to open. If the window closed Dale found a way over the wall. To Dale there was always a way, a way to do it, and a way to do it better. How lucky anyone was to have known him. With love and great appreciation for Dale and with deepest sympathy for his loving wife Nancy and family.

This is a sad day....Mr. Brougher will be missed greatly. As a child, I always thought of him as "Daddy's boss" and as an adult, he eventually became mine. I will always appreciate his willingness to allow me to interview him while in college...I learned alot about him and gained a greater respect for him because of it. It is a day I will never forget. Your family will be in the prayers of mine. May God bless you during this time of grief.
