Ted Fitzkee Obituary

NAPLES, FL Ted Kinley Fitzkee, 71, husband of 50 years of Carolyn Ann Keeny Fitzkee, died March 22, 2012, in Naples, Fla., from complications of multiple myeloma. He was the son of the late W. Eugene and Alberta Kinley Fitzkee. Ted was born in York, on March 31, 1940 and was a 1958 graduate of William Penn Sr HS in York. He then attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, with additional art studies in New York, Massachusetts and Arizona. Ted was a multi-talented painter, restorer of artworks, and teacher. His artistic skills led him to participate in many and varied aspects of the art world, including a stint as an archeological "dig" artist in San Salvador for the University of Colorado. The U.S. Navy commissioned him as a Naval Combat Artist and his paintings hang in the Pentagon and the US Naval Museum. He was represented by galleries in York, Lancaster and Harrisburg, Santa Fe, N.M., and Naples, Fla. Often his one-man shows sold out completely, and his work is owned by numerous collectors. His teaching career began in the 1970's as an instructor of painting, drawing and art history at the York Academy of Art in York. In 1982 he co-founded the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design and served as its Dean and Interim President from 1982 until 1995. He encouraged many young people to pursue artistic careers. In 1996 Ted and Carolyn moved to Naples, Fla., where Ted turned his talents to the restoration of paintings, tall case clock dials and other museum quality painted objects. He was well respected throughout the East Coast as an expert in this intricate and specialized work. Ted was a long time member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Mooring Line Drive, Naples. In addition to his wife Carolyn, with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 25, 2011, Ted is survived by a son, Thomas Keeny Fitzkee and his wife Sherry; two daughters, Lisa Ann Fitzkee Avery and her husband Todd, and Kate Ryland Fitzkee Sharpe and her husband Kevin; five grandchildren, Eden Brooke Fitzkee, Tyler Keeny Fitzkee, Brett Nathaniel Sharpe, Amanda Caroline Sharpe and William Pierce Sharpe; six step grandchildren, Thorne, Faren, Troy, Brianna, Megan and Heather Avery. He is also survived by a sister, Jane Fitzkee Ash of West Chester, and a brother, Stephen Fitzkee of Groton, Mass. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by a sister, Joan Fitzkee Gross; and a baby brother, William Fitzkee. Graveside services will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery in York, on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. Procession will begin at the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance at 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Ted Fitzkee Memorial Fund, c/o Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, PA 17603.

I was a student at the Academy. Ted was an extraordinary painter, artist, and above all, educator. With humour he guided us through our drawing and painting courses. He brought the best out of each of us. He encouraged us to be true to what drove us to become artists.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

Most of the students at the Academy '69-'72 thought of Ted as a friend and guide. He was an inspiration and opened many eyes to creative thinking. His teachings are with many former students today. My sincere condolences. Craig Kaufman

I met Ted when I owned the art gallery on Orange Street in Lancaster, PA. We shared a lot in common and in my opinion, he was a very well-rounded artist. I also remember talking to him when he was at the York Academy in the 1970's. Being the art teacher at Columbia High School, I introduced some of my students to him and his art. He will be missed but just think, he's in heaven talking to some of the old masters.

Dear Carolyn, I am sorry I never got to tell Ted what an influence he was to me as an artist and teacher. So much of what I learned from him I have passed on to my own students over the years. I will always be grateful.

To the family of Ted Fitzkee,
I was saddened to hear of Ted's passing. He was the dean at PSA&D while I attended classes there from 1987 through 1990. He was a well respected teacher and all around good person, and I know he will be missed by his family and friends. May your memories of Ted, and the knowledge that through his work he has made a positive impact on the lives of so many people, help to ease your grief.

May you see God's light on the path ahead when the road you walk is dark.
May you always hear, even in your hour of sorrow, the gentle singing of the lark.
When times are hard may hardness never turn your heart to stone.
May you always remember when the shadows fall—you do not walk alone.

Our deepest sympanthy goes out to the Fitzkee family. I had Ted as an art instructor at PA School of Art & Design when it first formed in Marietta, PA. He taught me so much about painting. He was always lighthearted and was such a kidder. He was great artist whose talents will be missed.
