Bob Edwards Obituary

Bob L. Edwards, a cherished husband, mentor, and friend, died at his residence in Etowah, North Carolina, on Thursday, November 07, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on January 08, 1942, in Madison County, North Carolina, Bob lived a life filled with purpose, passion, and an unwavering commitment to enriching the lives of those around him. A proud graduate of Mars Hill High School and Mars Hill University, Bob's love for music was evident from a young age. He played with the University Band during both his high school and college years, setting the stage for a lifelong dedication to music education. In 1971, Bob was hired to create a band program in the West Henderson School district. Starting with just 45 high school band students and 100 in elementary schools, his vision and leadership quickly transformed the program. By Christmas that first year, his students were ready for their inaugural concert-a resounding success that sparked the formation of a vibrant band boosters' program. Under his guidance, the West Henderson Flying Falcon Band grew to march one hundred strong in full uniforms the following autumn. His bands, including the jazz band, went on to win numerous awards and even had the honor of performing at Disneyland on multiple occasions. Beyond his professional achievements, Bob was an avid traveler. Alongside his beloved wife, Judy, he explored the world extensively, finding joy and inspiration in both international destinations and the diverse landscapes of the United States. They cherished their winters in Florida and found peace and camaraderie in Pennsylvania's Amish Country, creating lasting memories with friends. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Zeb and Blanche Edwards; his sister, Joyce Gregg (Harry); his in-laws, Albie and Eula Honeycutt; and his sister-in-law, Sue Cantrell. He leaves behind a loving family who will continue to honor his legacy: his devoted wife, Judy Edwards; Amy Myers (Billy), Will Myers (Sarah), Tammy Gregg, A.C. Honeycutt, Jr. (Susie), Nick Honeycutt, Amanda Cantrell (Tony), Anthony Cantrell, Kymberly Kaperonis (Pete), Gene Cantrell; and several cousins. He is also survived by his adopted family of close friends and neighbors, whose kindness and support meant the world to him, especially in his final year. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Bob will always be remembered as a person who led an honorable life, marked by kindness, integrity, and the desire to leave a positive footprint wherever he went. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched, through the music he loved, and the countless lives he inspired.:

Denna and I are both saddened to hear about a favorite WHHS teacher and friend. As a member of that first band at West, I knew right away that Bob had the biblical patience of Job to take-on such an enormous task. But he did it. To have the musical skill to teach a rowdy bunch of teenagers to read music and transfer that to actual notes on an instrument was incredible. Bob had to love us all. It was years later, that he and I reconnected in life after I had pursued a path in more traditional music... something that he was surely exposed to being from Madison County. It made my day to see Bob and Judy at one of my gigs.
Denna and I, along with all WHHS Alumnus, will remember him as a great looking, mustached musical genius that loved people and life.
Godspeed dear friend...Denna and J.Larry Keith

Mrs. Judy,
I am so sorry for your loss. It is a loss to us all. Bob Edwards changed my life in so many ways. He was probably the most influential adult in my life from 1973 - 1979.
He provided a safe space for all the misfits and weird kids (I was one of them) to be who we were and still feel accepted and welcomed.
I have been giggling as I think of all the crazy memories and joyful times we spent with him. I´m forever grateful to have been a part of the B-I-G, the B-A-D, the B-O-B, the BIG, BAD, BOB BAND!!!!

Mr Edwards was a big part of our lives as band director at both Rugby & West. He taught, encouraged and gave me space to grow as a leader.
I was amazed by his half time show designs and thoroughly enjoyed integrating the flag Corp into them.
Through the years I've run into he and his wife Judy many times. It always brightened my day to visit in the grocery store isles
May peace and comfort be with all those mourning his absence.

Oh Judy I am so very sorry. You knew how much I loved him. He was so fun but he knew when we needed to get serious. Practicing on the football field everyday was so much fun learning new routines each week. I can still he him say to certain people "Pick up your feet!!" He had the patience of Job. We went to many fun places and new experiences. I only have good memories of BBB Flying Falcon Band. Judy you were such a part of our lives too and always helped. I will forever remember him and love him.

Judy, I just learned of Bob's passing. It is difficult to lose your lifelong companion, but if there is suffering for a long time, makes it a bit easier. Praying for God to give you peace and comfort.

I was in that West High marching band in the mid 70's. I graduated in '77. He was my all time favorite teacher, and the best memories of my high school years are centered almost exclusively around band activities. I am heartbroken to learn of his passing. Best. Teacher. Ever.
