Albert Mau Obituary
It is with great sadness to share that our beloved father, grandfather and husband, Albert R. Mau, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025 at the age of 95. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Alice K. Mau, four children and spouses (Melanie & David Westmark, Valerie & Vaughn Hollman, Gregory & Lea Mau and Gary & Elizabeth Mau), and two grandchildren (Nicholas and Eden Mau). Albert was born in Stambaugh, MI on April 26, 1929 and grew up in Wisconsin in a railroad family, so during his teen years he worked with his grandad and father on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He served in the Army Counterintelligence Corps during the Korean War and married Alice in 1953 after a chance meeting in the library at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Al worked for General Electric and Honeywell as a Finance Manager. It is no surprise the kids were raised with an appreciation for hard work, financial accountability and organizational skills.
His lifelong passions were golf (shared with Greg), barbershop music (shared with Gary), and sports in general. He coached Valerie in track and field and many a Sunday afternoon the family watched Phoenix Suns basketball games together. He enjoyed spending time with the "outlaws" (Dave, Vaughn, Lea and Beth) who were always helpful to the family and visited often. The grandkids remember their "Poppie" very fondly. He supported the pursuit of their dreams in personal training and musical theater careers. He was THE tenor of all barbershop tenors and was admired for his vocal talent by worldwide barbershop fans, especially upon winning the 1968 International Quartet Championship as tenor of "The Western Continentals." He was also the longstanding tenor for another Phoenix favorite quartet "Remember When." He served on many church councils and as choir director. There was nothing better than standing up in church to sing the anthem and follow his smiling face as he directed us. After the song was over, he'd give us the thumbs up sign to say Well Done!
Al and Alice raised their family in Phoenix and Los Angeles and then retired to the cool pines of Munds Park, AZ where Al played lots of golf with his foursome "Charlie's Angels" where he always attempted to shoot his age! At the Pinewood Country Club, he celebrated two milestone wedding anniversaries and participated in many Pinewood Players productions with Alice and Melanie. Later in life, Al enjoyed watching the Arizona Diamondbacks play and even celebrated his 90th birthday at the ballpark.
We will honor this great man, the patriarch of our family (and also quite a character), with a Celebration of Life service to be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West on April 10, 2025 at 11:00 AM with a luncheon reception to follow. Lord of Life is located on the northeast corner of Meeker Blvd and RH Johnson Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of the Valley. Although Al was in Hospice for only a short time, the compassionate care and grief support provided to the family touched us. Dad, we love you so much and will always remember your genuine smile. We are heartbroken but rejoice you are with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and we will be reunited someday. The loving care provided by Mom for many years allowed you both to spend precious time together at home. We know your love song to Mom is "With a Song in My Heart"! We can only imagine how your beautiful voice sounds in Heaven. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Albert, please visit our floral store.
