Barbara Boles Pyne Herrick Obituary
In the summer of 1922 temperatures in Dinuba, California climbed into the high 90s, and so a pregnant woman with three toddlers and her 18-year old sister with her toddler, went up into the Sierras to cool off and camp for a few weeks. There a most unexpected thing happened.
With the assistance of her teen-age aunt to help her mother and a fellow camper to watch all the toddlers, Barbara was born in General Grant National Park (now part of Sequoia National Park) July 30, 1922 and given the middle name Grant to commemorate the place of her birth.
She and her three siblings were born within 51 months of each other and so grew up with a pack mentality: good, bad, or awful Bob, Betty, Ed, and Barbara all did it together.
The family moved to Redwood City where Barbara and her siblings grew up together and where her parents both died. Barbara graduated from Sequoia High School in Redwood City and began working for Southern Pacific Railroad. Here she met the love of her life, Joseph Raymond Pyne.
They dated a couple of years and after Pearl Harbor's bombing, Joe enlisted in the US Navy and was assigned to Skaggs Island Naval Communications Center about 75 miles from Redwood City. Barbara and Joe wrote regularly, got together as frequently as he had leave, and then married January 16, 1944.
After Joe's discharge they moved to San Francisco where they lived with Joe's widowed mother due to housing shortages as all the veterans returned home. Joe worked during the day and attended law school at night. After graduating, instead of taking the bar exam, he jointed the FBI. During his tenure there he was assigned to Salt Lake City, Utah; Cape Girardeau, Missouri; St Louis, Missouri; and to Phoenix in 1958. At each place, Barbara made a home for her ever growing family.
Stephen Joseph (Sonja) was born at San Francisco in 1949, James Richard (June) born at Palo Alto, California in 1950, John William (Wendy, and Rita) at Cape Girardeau in 1953, and Daniel Thomas (Vickie) at Phoenix in 1961.
Barbara's hobbies and activities were ones she could fit around raising her family. She had a golf club in her hand by 1944, and in Phoenix she played numerous places but was especially happy after she and Joe joined Phoenix's El Carro Golf Club when it opened in 1980. Bridge was also a big part of her life and she played with a number of groups, especially a duplicate group where she and Joe played together. Barbara also loved the FBI Wives group where she played until she was the last woman left alive!
After Joe passed in 1984, she married Martin Herrick in 1990. Though he passed in 1991, Barbara continued to live in the home they bought together. Martin is survived by his two children, Chrys and Scott, as well as five grandchildren.
In her later years she was lovingly cared for by her son Dan, caregivers Vickie Shagena, Dawn Shagena, Shirley Famiglietti, and Tina Martin. Special thanks to Vickie for her tender care.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents (Virginia and Robert Boles), both husbands (Joe 1984, and Martin 1991), as well as all her siblings.
She will be missed.
