Alfonso G. Sanchez

Alfonso G. Sanchez beloved husband, father and grandpa, 93, went to be with his Lord on September 20,2021 in Albuquerque, NM. Alfonso was born on February 23, 1928, in Belen, NM to Ernesto and Anita Sanchez. He was one of ten children. Alfonso joined the military the day after he graduated from high school, serving in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII. With the help of the GI Bill, he began college and joined the enlisted reserves. He was activated and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War for another two years. Upon his return from the war, Sanchez completed his law degree at the University of New Mexico (1957). He served as Assistant District Attorney and later District Attorney of the First Judicial District. Alfonso served as DA during the time of the Tierra Amarilla Court House raid in 1967. Alfonso helped organized SER Jobs for Progress which helped educate and train young Chicanos and match them with employers. He also organized Respect for Law program in schools in the First Judicial District to try to motivate children to grow up with respect for the law. Alfonso was active with the GI Forum and many other community organizations. He helped organize DeVargas Savings and Loan Association of Santa Fe as a response to what he felt were discriminatory loan practices in local banks. He began his private law practice and served for over 60 years as an attorney in Santa Fe.

Alfonso led a life of service to his Lord, his country, his state and his family. He was a man of honor and courage and always worked to help those in need.

I am so sorry to hear of Al's passing. And also sorry to hear he was right here in Albuquerque. I would have loved to visit with him. I worked with him at his office at Grant Avenue, then, at the D.A.'s office and beyond. He was a real good man. I send love, good thoughts and prayers to Cecilia and all his loved ones. May God hold you in His loving arms and send special angels to help you through your loss, grief and sorrow. My heart hurts and your must be broken pieces. But love never dies and his love will always live in your heart forever.

So sorry to hear of Al's passing he will be missed by all. Al gave me my first job as a lawyer he hired me to be one of his Assistant DA's in Santa Fe in 1965. It was one of the greatest jobs I ever had and it opened the door to the rest of my career as a lawyer and judge. Al was a smart, compassionate , fair but firm DA, I learned so much from him on how to try a case and generally conduct yourself as a professional. Al gave me a job and a chance to prove myself and he remained my friend all these years. Rest in peace my friend . Joe Baca

Cecilia, Alicia, Arlene, Peggy and to all that knew and loved Alfonso you have been blessed with his presence and now he is in the presence and at peace of those that went before him. He was a mentor, advisor and historian to me with memories of the Chicano movement, SER, the GI Forum and so much more. He is at rest and the lyrics of Here I Am Lord will console you.
