Dennis West Obituary

Dennis E. West

Dennis Eugene West, a resident of Albuquerque, died on June 10, 2024.

Remembering Dennis, we hold dear his love for his immediate family--his wife, Carolyn Wickwire; his brother, Doyle West, of Indianapolis, IN; his sister-in-law, Sue West, also of Indianapolis, IN; and his children, Melissa Davidson, Christopher West, and Matthew West. But his love extended beyond blood relations. He formed a special bond with his "surrogate family," Charl, Patricia, Etienne, and Luc de Villiers, who were not just friends but family in every sense.

Dennis, a man of many talents, served his country for 23 years in the US Air Force. As a boom operator, he played a crucial role in refueling jets in mid-air, requiring immense skill and precision. He also served as a K-9 handler. After his discharge, he furthered his education, earning two bachelor's degrees. He then worked for an agency that implemented the Americans with Disabilities Act. Beyond his professional life, he was a passionate woodworker, author, actor, and playwright, leaving a legacy of creativity and artistry.

The canine love of his life was Mitzi, about whom he wrote a children's book, Mitzi: Tale of a Dog.

In high school in Indianapolis, he lettered in tennis and loved playing baseball, especially with his brother Ed.

Dennis' love for people was boundless. He had a unique ability to strike up conversations with random strangers, making them feel instantly at ease. His love for making new friends was a testament to his warm and sociable nature. Those who knew him remember him as witty, intelligent, generous, and compassionate. He took great joy in giving.

He was an avid supporter of the Albuquerque theater community. He and his wife established a scholarship fund at UNM Department of Theatre and Dance.

He will be cremated, and his ashes interred at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe with military honors. Celebrations of Dennis' life will be held at High Point Grill in Albuquerque and at Cadot Restaurant in Dallas.

Donations in his memory may be made to Dennis West and Carolyn Wickwire Scholarship Fund for Theatre | University of New Mexico Foundation.

Our introduction to the famous and sorely missed Mitzi.

Dennis and I shared a birthdate and occasionally a cake. This one commemorated our admission, by a papel dispensation Dennis and Carolyn engineered, into a local Mazda club. We drove a BMW, with their blessings.

Dennis and Carolyn dancing at one of their annual Anniversary celebrations. We´re glad they did that. Every precious year!

He will be missed!

I once was on a zoom meeting with Dennis and Carolyn. They were interested in helping us financially produce a New Mexico program. When I asked how much, Dennis quickly blurted out a number and Carolyn gave him a look. Not in anger, not with malice, only a look that said you may have spoken too soon. His reaction was perfect. He just smiled and we moved on. So much respect toward each other from both of them. I knew right then they were perfect for each other.
