Jerry Seidenwurm Obituary

Jerry Seidenwurm

Jerry

Seidenwurm (5/13/45-10/12/23) loved life--almost all of it and almost all the time.

His favorite line to his wife, Rhonda, was from a song by Tim O'Rourke: "Be sure you have your arms around the one who makes you smile."

Jerry was born and grew up in Rockville Centre on Long Island, New York, the son of Jesse and Lillian Seidenwurm and the younger sibling of his brother, Rick, who allowed him to tag along on boyhood adventures. It was an all American childhood of playing baseball with neighborhood chums until it was too dark to see and spending summers in camp in the Adirondack mountains. Jerry's biggest childhood disappointment was that his father refused to move the family to San Francisco when the Giants moved there in 1958, crushing his dream of being a Giants' bat boy.

During the middle of his college career at Williams College, he left for a year to join VISTA, the domestic Peace Corps in the War on Poverty. There he met his first wife, Jackie. Jackie and Jerry's first daughter, Jennifer, was born while they were at Williams. After Jerry's graduation, they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Jerry was employed as a teacher at Albuquerque Academy. They adopted their second daughter, Julie, a year after settling there, and their only son, Brock, a couple of years later. In 1970 Jerry joined the Albuquerque Public Schools as a program evaluator and remained in the district until his retirement in 2000. Some of Jerry's best memories of early life in Albuquerque included coaching his kids in their various sports interests. Julie and Jennifer are still fans of multiple teams, and Brock was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan until his death in 2019.

Life became a new adventure after Jerry met a red-headed school

superintendent from the deep South whom he married in 1994. Rhonda moved to Albuquerque to work with APS as a Region Superintendent. Upon his retirement, Jerry agreed to follow her wherever her career took her, exacting a promise that they would return to his beloved Albuquerque when retirement was a reality for them both.

Meanwhile, daughter Jennifer decided it was time for a new generation of Seidenwurms, and Jerry went with her to China to meet and bring home his only grandchild, Jaelyn. Jaelyn adopted grandpa's love of baseball, and they spent hours together perfecting her skills and knowledge of the game. He adored his granddaughter, and the feeling was returned in abundance.

Jerry was one of the many men who claimed their mothers had thrown away a childhood sports card collection worth a fortune, and he spent much of his retirement rebuilding his. Jerry spent countless happy hours accumulating and sorting his collection.

Jerry and Rhonda travelled extensively, visiting dozens of countries and all seven continents along the way. When asked about his favorite trips, he was sure to mention their second camera safari to the Serengeti that included their daughters and granddaughter.

Their dogs were always a huge part of their lives, and the first step of planning any trip was to be sure the dog sitters were available. Dawn, VeeBee, Zarka, Easy, and Moxie brightened Jerry's life as his and Rhonda's beloved, four-legged companions.

On the night that a blood clot to his lungs ended his life, he made margaritas and tacos for Rhonda and his two daughters. He also sang a favorite refrain that he believed defined his life: "Oh, what a lucky man he was."

Jerry was my friend, going back to elementary school. Our lives shared many facets: playing one-o'-cat as kids, in an empty lot on the corner; attending South Side High School in Rockville Centre; being active in sports; attending a small college; volunteering for a form of national service (VISTA, PEACE CORPS); being committed educators; loving our dogs; having mothers who played weekly bridge together; having an older brother. Lynda and I touched bases with Jerry and Rhonda, at our 50th high school reunion in 2013, and the four of us subsequently took a road trip up to Huntington. We visited them at their home in Albuquerque for the annual Balloon Fiesta; they gave Lynda and me a warm welcome in their home, when we enjoyed many reminiscences. Jerry was a great fellow: welcoming, positive, humorous, open. He gave his best to everyone and to everything he undertook. His family and friends are distinctly impoverished, confronting his absence. John Schechter

Saw Jerry at our 50 th high school reunion. We laughed for hours. He lived directly in back of me growing up in RVC. Played some of that baseball on the school yard at Wilson school. My first crush was a girl named Rosie Rappaport who dumped me for Jerry to go with him to the sixth grade prom. He won many awards in high school for academics and athletics. Although I only saw him once or twice since high school I will miss his presence

Dear Rhonda and Jenifer, I´m am so sorry to hear of Jerry´s passing . Rhonda, you two were made for each other, God made a perfect match ! And Jenifer , you made Jerry´s dream of being a parent come true . Jerry was an original all around nice guy ! He was my RDA program support during my first Principalship, at Monte Visit . He was a saint, always patient , always had a way of not making you feel that your one brick from a full load when it came to making sense of all data, which was a lot . I always got such a kick when I would swing by office , to find Jerry´s collection of sandwiches in one of his desk drawers and a snack or 2, or 3,.......lying around just waiting for Jerry to " chow" down. The world has lost a kind soul and Rhonda, you´re heart must be broken. Never forget your APS friends /admirers who will be there for you , lunch, movies, walks....... When you need a friend or someone to listen .....I pray Jerry is keeping data on angels in heaven ...... and I hope he adds his own name to the list as being a newcomer who earned his wings here on earth.....

I met Jerry a year or 2 after meeting his brother Rick and was not surprised to find him to be a really good, kind person. Being closer in age to me than his brother, and both being New Yorkers, loving dogs and music of the 60´s, we had a lot to talk about. I was so saddened to hear about his death, yet also glad that he died a happy man and without suffering.

Jerry lived across the street from my sister, and through their beer sessions, I met Jerry. His love of baseball, and my passion for it, helped helped to bring about a friendship that lasted almost than 60 years. We played on several softball teams and he was was a great teammate. Life is a little darker now that he's gone, but his memory will always be a shining light for my soul. I send my sincere condolences to his family, and hope they can seek comfort through the love of friends and family that surround them. He was a great guy and I will miss him.

"Hello again, everybody... It's a bee-yoo-tiful day for baseball."

Jerry and Rhonda were a perfect match. Their life together was an inspiration for all of us. Jerry was indeed a very lucky man to have found love and happiness in everything he did and how he lived his life to the fullest. I send a big hug to Rhonda and the Seidenwurm family. Y mando un adios con mucho cariño a mi amigo, Jerry.

I only spoke to Jerry once on the phone. He had a pleasant voice. So I believe he sounded good when he sang the line... "Oh, what a lucky man he was".

I had the good fortune to work with Jerry and Rhonda when they joined the Sandoval County CASA program (volunteering with kiddos in foster care). I can attest to the fact that Jerry had a special love for all children, not just his own. He was one of the finest men I have ever known and will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
