John Gunther Obituary

Gunther, John David

John David Gunther

2/26/1962â€"3/15/2017

Beloved husband, fabulous father, devoted coach, everyone's teacher, and a loyal best friend was welcomed with excited and open arms by our Lord and Savior Jesus who said "Well done my good and faithful servant". John was born February 26, 1962 in Springfield, IL and moved to Cochiti Lake when he was eight. He graduated from Bernalillo HS as valedictorian in 1980 and from UNM with a BS in engineering. He met the love of his life, Shari, and they moved to California where he worked for Northrup for five years. They moved back to Albuquerque to raise their four beautiful children: Brittney, Robert, David, and Sarah. Some dear friends suggested John become a teacher, and that was the beginning of his teaching career. He started at Albuquerque HS where he taught for five years before moving to Sandia HS where he taught math for 17 years. He coached all levels of baseball and was the head baseball coach at Sandia for six years.

John loved so many things â€" fishing in the Chama, grooming the baseball field, cooking, and traveling â€" but what he loved most was his family and being God's servant in this world. He never wavered from his love and care for those around him and he was forever welcoming people in his home and life.

John passed into Heaven on March 15th which makes his departure date

3/15. We were in awe when we looked up John 3:15 and encourage you to do the same.

A celebration of John's life will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 5PM at Copper Point Church.

I knew John from about 1980-1983 when I was very small and he was a good family friend. I am very saddened to just now hear of his passing but I know that his wife and children and family will be blessed in many ways. I am glad that I was able to reconnect with John, even if it was by email, the last year or so.

If you knew him, you loved him.

I've known John since we were mere tikes, and he was always the same caring, loving person. I will miss our all too infrequent card games, laughs, and rock-n-roll. Rest in Peace my friend John...
