Larry Kern Obituary

Larry Kern

Larry Sherman Kern, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on the evening of August 19, 2024, at the age of 74. After a courageous battle with lymphoma, Larry leaves behind a legacy of laughter, generosity, and a life richly woven into the fabric of Albuquerque.

Born on May 10, 1950, in Lebanon, Indiana, to Caryl and Rosemary (Schenck) Kern, Larry's athletic talents led him to New Mexico State University where he played college football. It was in Las Cruces that fate intervened, and Larry met the love of his life, Marsha. They married in 1970 and soon settled in Albuquerque, where Larry built a successful career as a boiler safety inspector, first with Continental Insurance and then with the City of Albuquerque.

Larry's life transcended his professional endeavors. He possessed an insatiable zest for life, actively participating in and leading numerous community activities. From Lamaze instruction, city league basketball, and youth soccer and basketball to indulging his passion for model railroading, Larry's energy and enthusiasm were boundless. He was a dedicated member of the Cielito Lindo Neighborhood Association, "M" Mountain RV Travel Club, and the New Mexico Artist Blacksmith Association.

Larry's infectious laughter and unwavering generosity were hallmarks of his character. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome and valued, leaving an indelible mark on all who crossed his path. His favorite pastime was welcoming friends and neighbors to his beloved shop with a heartfelt: "Happy Day!"

Larry is survived by his devoted wife, Marsha; his loving children, Patrick and Katie; his brother, Garry "Corncob"; his sister, Janee; and a large extended family in Las Cruces and Indiana. He was preceded in death byhis parents and older brother Daryl.

Our sweet Papa Kern, a man who embodied the spirit of community and kindness, will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Larry's life will be held on the afternoon of October 12th, 2024. For further details, the family welcomes inquiries at [email protected].

Funny memory. When our families were together, probably for
dinner, Harry discovered he could put his shoe inside Larry's. Perfect fit!!! Lots of good memories, camping, Marsha too close to the fire and ruining her glasses!!! Both Harry and Larry gone too soon.

It was during a five minute welding favor for me -- that involved about two hours of wandering discussion -- that I really came to respect Larry as one of Good Guys in this world. Miss ya. Salute.

Dear Marsha
So many fond memories - LaMaze - spaghetti dinners - small people play dates and birthday parties - late nights of bridge.
Wishing you peace at this difficult time

Katie and family,
I'm so sorry to hear this news. Your father was your number one supporter of your UNM basketball career. We ran into him many times at the Pit (and the Pit West during the tournament) and enjoyed talking to him about the team and other topics. We also enjoyed hearing his team updates on the radio when he would call Tony Lynn's show.
We really enjoyed knowing your dad and are very saddened by this news.
You and your family are in our prayers.
