Laurie Nelson Obituary

Laurie Lane Nelson

Mom, Grandma Laurie, passed away on August 14, 2024 of natural causes. She lived happily in her final years with her cat Karma. 6-14-41 to 8-14-24.

Laurie is survived by her brother Wayne Kovsky and his wife Peggy, her son Steve Nelson and his wife Jenny Yeh-Nelson of Albuquerque and her Grandson Mitchell Nelson of Albuquerque and her Granddaughter Tiffany White and her husband Garrett of Socorro, NM. Laurie was preceded in death by her daughter Shari Nelson.

Laurie grew up in Dallas and Grand Prairie Texas and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1959. She enjoyed languages and writing. Laurie attended North Texas University and the University of New Mexico at different times and received her Bachelor's Degree in Technical Writing. Laurie worked in different and interesting jobs using her technical writing and editing skills at Lockheed, Texas Instruments and other places until she was not able to continue working. She loved her grandchildren and moved from Texas to Albuquerque to be closer to them, to have them come over for sleepovers, and to take them out to eat at Chili's. Her passion was cats and she volunteered at the Animal Humane Association of NM, going to cat adoption events and also taking calls to help with cat questions. Her cat Karma was adopted from the animal humane association and they had a great connection. We will miss her very much. Donations made in her memory can be made to the Animal Humane Association of NM.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Laurie. I am very saddened to learn of her passing. I knew Laurie through all her efforts in advocating for those living with Lymphedema. Her work in the creation of "10ThingsLE.info" was integral to the early days of patient advocacy and was an important informational tool when there were limited resources. Laurie“s intellect and writing skills were impressive as was her willingness to help others figure out ways to navigate the disease. I enjoyed many email conversations with Laurie over the years appreciating each and every one of them.
Again, my sympathies. Joyce McMahon
