Chris,
I just learned the horrible news. I am so sorry. I was thinking of you two because I spotted what I think was a yellow-bellied sapsucker clinging to the window screen of my home in Atlanta. I remembered that you had an academic interest in these guys so I wanted to reach out and reconnect. There’s an expression I have seen that Jews use to express their condolences: May his memory be a blessing. I think it’s as good as anything, so in that vein I will share a few of my memories of Mike. He was a kind person and fun to be around. He was quick to laugh. We had fun playing beach volleyball. He delighted at “Profit avocados,” giants that you couldn’t find at Safeway, plucked from my mom’s tree in West Covina. I was happy that he got into UNM med school but sorry to see you two go. Inevitably, we lost touch. Reading the condolences, it appears that he was beloved by his patients. He was much too young. I am very sorry for you and your kids.
Take care.

To Chris, Allison an Nicholas, I pray you are all doing well.
I am little late with this, but have the need to express some heartfelt thoughts and memories of this most exceptional, gifted man, my cousin Mike.
Mike Clayton, was my first cousin. He was so sweet, kind, hugely intelligent and the greatest Allergy/Asthma Dr. Children and Adults treated by him over the years, were indeed fortunate.
We grew up in Albuquerque during the 60's, together. Our family moved here from Texas, as Mike's family had, before us.
I was a child with terrible asthma and my Dr. in Texas advised my parents they needed to move to a more dry, climate. So, we first came to Albuquerque to visit Mike's family; my Aunt Noveline and Uncle Doyle, who was my mother's brotherand of course, the kids, Mike, Jalynn and Phillip. Noveline, was such a gracious hostess and so much fun and engaging to be around. Doyle was a quiet, kind hearted and loving. All of us Gilbert kids, had so much fun playing with the Clayton kids. It was an exciting trip! My asthma improved, just visiting, so we moved here in 1959.
We didn't live far apart then and the Clayton family and our family and my siblings and I, continued having on-going fun relationships with the Clayton Kids and their parents, getting to know them better.
Mike was so unusual and special, even then. He was kind to everyone and not a bully', as many boys were, at that age. He was so sweet, always. He had a such a gentle, calming nature about him. The peacemaker. It was always obvious, how smart he was!
As years went on, we did not see each other often, over the years, Mike became a Physician. I remember thinking many times, he was not like so many Dr's I knew. He was REAL. It wasn't about the physical possessions he could acquire. He always seemed so content and happy, with his wife and children, right where they were! He was truly blessed.
I always had so much respect for Mike.
Mike married the very beautiful and sweet, Chris. She is an exceptional person, I will never forget. They then had Nicholas and Allison, their beloved children. I wish I would have known them, better.
My insurance didn't cover my asthma/allergy treatment with Mike, or he would have always been my Dr. One time, when my treatment wasn't working and frustrated with my Dr's, I went Mike for help. Afterwards, when I was in his front office, in process of paying for the visit, which I wanted to do, he came back out to the front and flat out refused to take my payment. It was a bit of a scene between the two of us, arguing about the payment with the patients waiting! He was determined, not to take my money. So good hearted, Mike was.
Mike prescribed a medication for me, the other specialists had missed, which improved my asthma and life, for years. Once he prescribed it, my other Dr's would not even question it and would fill it. They had so much respect for him. Recently, while at an appointment with my Sleep Medicine/Pulmonary Dr. I mentioned Mike's name, associated with the medication Mike had prescribed for me. The Dr. said he had heard very good things about him.
We didn't see each other often over the years, but I would keep up, somewhat, through my mother in later years. We were all very busy with our lives then, as people are these days, as well.
My biggest regret? Not making it a Priority, to keep regular contact with the Clayton Kids and their families, over the years. We missed so much!
Mike's parents raised him in the Church. He knew the Lord. Surely the angels rejoiced, when Mike went Home. Be joyful with God, Mike! See you again someday! With love, Cathi Gilbert-Hamilton

Thank you kind sir for your gentle heart, your love of helping other's, especially our little one's. Sofia loved coming to see you, even if it was because of her itchy skin. You had humor and kindness in all of those moments where my daughter wanted to cry. To your family; I'm so sorry for your loss. Your father and husband was a great man. God be with each of you.

What a wonderful person, an honor and privilege to know. My son and I were patients, and he treated us with compassion, listened, and took the time to think carefully and give us his best medical advice. He was a GREAT doctor and will be sorely missed. We should all strive to be like him. To his family members and close friends, I am so sorry, and I pray you will be comforted...it seems to us he was taken too early, but I know we can trust the wisdom of Him who loved him best.

Dr. Clayton was a great man. I first met him when I was a kid at UNM durning an asthma research study. He was always very kind through the 20 years that I knew him. Always giving me free samples of medicine because I couldn't afford them. He will be greatly missed. I will always be thankful for the care that he gave me and will never forget his calm kind demeanor. Adam

Michael Clayton was by far the best Doctor I have ever had. I have struggled with my immune disorder for my whole life but since 98 he has been my go to guy. He has helped me cope with it and recently crohns disease, eye issues, stomach issues and so much more. He will be so very missed, my wife and I are more than thankful for him and the blessings God has given us through him.

We were heartbroken to hear of Dr. Clayton's passing. Our sons Xavier, Ezekiel and Zechariah were patients of Dr. Clayton. Dr. Clayton was kind, genuine, understanding and attentive to each one of our son's needs. His goal, like ours, was for each child to be healthy and active. As parents, we could not have asked for a finer physician. Recently, we found out that Dr. Clayton was sharing his talent as a physician to care for patients beyond his practice. This was a demonstration of his spirit to care for others. Dr. Clayton was a true professional and will be sadly missed. Our memories of Dr. Clayton will include his caring nature and the fun conversations we had with him about fishing and outdoor adventures. With heavy hearts we send our condolences to Dr. Clayton's family, friends, and staff.
Our deepest regards,
Joseph Roesch

There are no appropriate words to properly offer my sympathies on your family's loss. Mike was one of the original good guys. I've known Mike since 7th grade and valued his friendship in junior high, high school and undergraduate school. He was always the nicest person (better than most), and one of the brightest souls I'll ever know. I highly respected him because of the true human being he was. I can't ever remember him doing anything but the right thing. He brought so much good to the world that he will be sorely missed.

My son Ian was a patient of Dr. Clayton. I brought him there after two other allergists had both misdiagnosed and given us incorrect information about Ian's allergies. Dr. Clayton immediately put us at ease. He helped us to understand the allergies medically and also to assign the appropriate level of risk and concern to the condition. Also, he was warm and friendly and immediately put us at ease.
He was also a kind man and I remember him talking about his family very lovingly.
It's very sad to see someone as kind and compassionate and as gifted at his work as Dr. Clayton depart our world so unexpectedly. But we should celebrate the fact that he was here and he made a tremendous difference in the lives of the people he touched, especially his patients.
Sending our condolences and much love to his family.

Mike was such a bright light in this world. He had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world when he talked with you. A life well lived and now he can rest waiting for the next life. Many will attest to the fact that Mike played football the way he lived life.......all out. He would hit you so hard that its was numbing and then reach down and help you up. Sorry for the separation and loss. Peace and comfort to his family and all who had the honor of being blessed by knowing him.
