Myra Ortiz Obituary

Ortiz, Myra Anne

Myra Anne Ortiz, 81, beloved mother and friend passed away on Thursday, October 8th after a brief illness.

She was born during the Dust Bowl in Boise City, Oklahoma on March 3, 1934 to Truman and Elizabeth (Ciprian) Smith.

Her family moved to farm in Chama, New Mexico shortly after, where she grew up. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Highlands University, and it was there that she met her husband Oliver Ortiz. They married in 1955 and were loving life partners until his death in 2009. Oliver and Anne worked in school districts in Glorieta, Stanley and Vaughn before settling in Santa Fe to raise their five children.

Anne was a proud and protective mother and wife, an excellent baker of state fair-winning cookies and buttery breads, a lover of Christmas, birds and kitties, a voracious reader of books, a devoted friend and counselor and a woman of great faith and wisdom. She was a sweet lady with a will of steel, defied the odds by sending herself to college, converted herself to Catholicism as a teenager and powered through years of physical discomfort later in life. Anne and Oliver valued education for themselves and for their children, and were proud that all of her children are college graduates, with perfect attendance!

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Smith and sister Mary Pettingill and is happily reunited with husband Oliver and her oldest son, Michael Anthony who passed away in 1989.

She is survived by her brother John Smith, and four children, Deborah, Beverly (Patrick O'Connell), Oliver Christopher (Nadine Talayumptewa), and Denise. She also leaves behind many in-laws, nieces and nephews and friends from church and the old neighborhoods. Special friends in her later years were Jo (Nena) Vincione, and Rose, Frances and Gloria, her niece Tracy Smith Fria and cousin Leo Smith.

Visitations will be held at Berardinelli Funeral Home at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, October 13th, where a rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00 am on Wednesday, October 14th at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to your charity of choice that does good work for children and the hungry.
