Richard Carruthers Obituary

Richard R. Carruthers



Richard R. Carruthers, age 86, passed away January 14, 2023, in Saratoga Springs, NY. Dick was born in Beaumont, Texas and raised in Tulsa, OK. After graduating from Westminster College (Fulton, MO) and medical school at Case Western Reserve University he migrated east. There he had a 20+ year career as a neurologist concluding as Associate Professor of Medicine at SUNY Stony Brook and chairman of neurology at Nassau University Hospital on Long Island. Upon retirement Dick and his wife Karen moved to Albuquerque. It was in NM that Dick indulged his wide ranging interests until declining health interfered. He played the banjo and recorder. He listened to works by Mozart and Phillip Glass and Cheap Trick. He taught his grandchildren to play chess. He was a calligrapher and sculptor. He was a birder who fed several generations of Road Runners who marched daily along the garden wall. Dick and Karen moved to Upstate NY in 2021 to be closer to family.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2PM on Saturday July 8, 2023 at the First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque, 3701 Carlisle Blvd., NE. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions in Richard's memory be made to Doctors Without Borders.

Jeradine and I were extremely sad to hear of Dick´s passing. We treasure the memories of staying with him and Karen in Albuquerque, and also meeting in London at Christmas. Rest in peace, Dick, and all of our love to Karen xxxx
