Robert Lutz Obituary

Robert Kelly Lutz

Robert Kelly Lutz passed away on October 25th, 2022, at the age of 63. He is survived by his son Ryan, his daughter Madison, step-mother Barbara, sister Karen, and current partner of 12 years, Lori. He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on November 17th, 1958. He attended Manzano High School where he ran cross country and met his future wife and partner of 29 years, Chris. Kelly came from a family of aviators and set his sights on attending the Air Force Academy, a goal he achieved in 1980. He graduated first in his major of Aviation Sciences and proudly flew F-15s, later becoming an instructor at Luke Air Force Base. In 1988 he joined Northwest Airlines as a DC-9 Co-pilot, and quickly moved through the ranks to Captain. He flew with Northwest, and later Delta, for 34 years. He loved nothing more than to be in the air, and logged over 26,000 hours of flying time during his aviation career (3 entire years spent in the sky). He created a home for himself in Austin, where he loved to spend time at the lake, enjoy a good cup of coffee, and pet any dog he came across. He always wore a pink tie and epaulets during October. He was immensely proud of his children. He was a caring, loving man and will be missed more than words can say.

Kelly was a lover of all furry friends and would go out of his way to pet any dog he saw or rescue any animal in need. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the New Mexico Animal Humane Society. https://animalhumanenm.givecloud.co/give. In the coming months, Kelly will be returned to Santa Fe National Cemetery to be laid to rest near his Grandfather, Father, and Uncle. Further details on the ceremony will be provided at a later date.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Kelly when he lived in Washington. He was one of the kindest, most genuine people I have ever met. And was he handsome. His untimely death was such a tragedy and he is still so missed. All my love to Lori and his family.

Kelly and I were "new hire" classmates at Northwest Airlines, in September 1988. He was always a joy to be around. Being close in seniority, we always tracked each other's careers in the airline. Before we made any bid request for new aircraft, I recall him saying to me "I'm not moving before you move". Lifestyle meant more to us than dollars. I am sure that those of you who spent the most time with him lately, will miss him greatly. My condolences Lori, family, and friends.

I am so sorry for your loss, Kelly and I went to jr. high and high school together. He was always a really good guy...sometimes a little mischievous. Again, I am sorry for your loss...

I had the absolute pleasure of flying with Kelly at Delta and even carpooled to the airport with him a couple of times. He was the kindest person I´ve ever flown with. My sincerest condolences to his family and Lori.

Kelly and I were both in the Aviation Sciences Major at the Academy and, as a result, took several courses and programs together. I got to know Kelly when we were both Cadet Navigation Instructors. He was always kind and one of the easiest guys to talk with that I know. We both loved flying and I was not surprised to learn of Kelly's military and commercial success in aviation.

My condolences to Kelly's family. Rest in Peace my friend knowing you did it right.

Respectfully,
Trey Stackman
